The SLR 650 is an almost all-terrain motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda . The machine, which looks like an enduro bike , was built from 1996 to 2000 in the Spanish Montesa plant near Barcelona and was intended to complement the product range as an inexpensive city bike. The type abbreviation SLR indicates the visual proximity to earlier motorcycles in the so-called scrambler style , the forerunners of the enduros.
Despite its moderate off-road appearance, the SLR 650 is a pure street motorcycle, whose off- road use should not exceed the use of gravel and field paths. Rougher terrain is countered by the very firm suspension (front, progressively wound fork springs as standard) and the heavily overdamped rear central spring strut of the motorcycle, which is also very difficult to adjust in terms of spring preload. In return, the chassis configured in this way ensures playful handling in city traffic and on winding country roads.
Furnishing
The SLR 650 is equipped with the same 650 cm³ radial four-valve single-cylinder four-stroke engine with an electric starter as its "big" sister model, the Honda NX 650 Dominator . Due to a modified camshaft, the SLR650 only has an output of 39 hp in favor of increased torque. The drive, derived from the Honda XBR 500 , does not have a kick starter. The engine hangs in a so-called "monoback" frame, in which a central frame tube with a rectangular profile forms the backbone.
In addition to the standard version with 39 HP (29 kW), the SLR650 was also sold in a standard 34 HP version (25 kW) for those who were new to driving licenses. Technically, the only difference between the two models is a different pin assignment on the ignition unit. A change is made within a few minutes, but in order not to lose the operating permit (ABE) and insurance cover, a corresponding report, as is distributed for dethrottling. For a subsequent throttling of the 39 HP version to 34 HP, there are also solutions from other providers with modified intake manifolds including a corresponding expert opinion. By dethrottling from 34 to 39 hp, the driving behavior improves, among other things better torque in higher speed ranges as well as a smoother engine run.
Facelift
At the end of 1998 the appearance of the SLR 650 was significantly revised. The most noticeable change in the motorcycle was a new cockpit (now with a tachometer, which the original version was missing) including a small cockpit fairing. The tank, which was already taken over from Honda's hard enduro bikes of the XR series, is now joined by a new seat including side and rear panels. The revised model is now sold under the name Honda Vigor , although the Honda internal model name RD 09 has not changed. The optical retouching did not allow the sales figures to increase as expected, so that Honda stopped production of the agile city runabout in 2000 after just five years.
The latest successor to the SLR 650 is the Funbike FMX 650 in Supermoto optics, which came onto the market in 2005 and has the same engine and an almost unchanged frame.
For all models of this series (SLR, Vigor and FMX) it is recommended to install an oil cooler for operation at higher temperatures.
