Horst Bürkle

Horst Bürkle (born June 9, 1925 in Nieder-Weisel ; † April 24, 2015 ) was a German Protestant , from 1987 Roman Catholic theologian .

Life

Since 1926 he lived in Cologne . After attending high schools in Cologne, Zweibrücken , Betzdorf , Wernigerode and Gleiwitz ( Abitur ), he was a soldier from 1943 to 1945 (wounded on the Eastern Front in 1944 ). He completed his studies (1945–1952) in Protestant theology at the Universities of Bonn , Tübingen , Cologne and at the Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York in 1952 with a theological master's thesis with Paul Tillich in New York City , and in 1951 the first theological service examination and 1954 the second theological service exam. After the vicariate (1952–1954) in Essen -Altstadt he was ordained in 1954 in Wuppertal - Barmen . From 1954 to 1956 he was study inspector of the preacher's seminary of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland in Wuppertal-Barmen. After receiving his doctorate in 1956 as Dr. theol. through the theological faculty of the University of Hamburg with the dissertation with Helmut Thielicke he was from 1956 to 1959 student pastor in the general secretariat of the Protestant student communities in Germany in Stuttgart. In 1959 he became head of the Mission Academy at the University of Hamburg . In 1963 he married Dorothee Weisbach (daughter Britta in 1965, daughter Anja in 1967). After his habilitation in 1964 for the subject of missions and religious studies at the theological faculty of the University of Hamburg with the thesis “Religion of the Spirit” and the kerygma , the private lecturer taught from 1965 to 1968 as a visiting professor at the University of East Africa in Kampala . From 1968 to 1987 he lectured as professor and director of the Institute for Missionary and Religious Studies in the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (research stays and lectures in Brazil , India and New Guinea and visiting professor in Seoul , Kyoto and Innsbruck ). In 1987 he joined the Roman Catholic Church . From 1989 until his retirement in 1991 he taught as a professor at the seminar for Christian worldview, religious and cultural theory at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. He was a member and chairman of various scientific societies (advisory board of the Görres Society for the Care of Science; founding member of the Academia Scientiarum et Artium Europaea ).
