Horst Weigelt

Horst Weigelt (* 7. April 1928 in Landshut in Silesia ;, province of Lower Silesia ; † 25. May 2018 in Nuremberg ) was a German railroad - engineer and author . From 1979 to the end of 1993 he was President of the Nuremberg Directorate of the former Deutsche Bundesbahn , and later the Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Bahn AG for the Free State of Bavaria .

He was the author of numerous works, particularly on railway history and technology. From May 1993, Weigelt was also the editor of the Railway Technical Review ; he had been a member of the magazine's advisory board since 1983.

Career

Weigelt studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1948 to 1954 . In 1955 he joined the federal railway service. After traineeship and second state examination , he became a research assistant at the Technical University of Berlin in 1957 . From 1960 he worked in construction and operations at the Hamburg Federal Railway Directorate. In 1963 he was appointed head of planning for the Hamburg S-Bahn , and in 1965 he became the head of the rapid-transit department at the Hamburg Transport Association . From 1970 he was a member of the management of the Institute for Research into Technological Development Lines ( ite ) Hamburg. In 1974 he was appointed head of the new S-Bahn building department of the Hamburg Federal Railway Directorate.

From 1979 he was President of the Federal Railway Directorate in Nuremberg . With the founding of Deutsche Bahn AG in January 1994, he was appointed as the executive officer for the Free State of Bavaria ; he held this post until January 1995. During his tenure as President of the Board of Directors, the first considerations, planning and the early construction phase of the Nuremberg – Ingolstadt – Munich high-speed line , the construction of the first two lines of the Nuremberg S-Bahn , the use of the first tilting technology multiple units in the local railways (" Pendolino ") ) and the establishment of the transport association for the greater Nuremberg area .

From 1992 to 1996 he was President of the German Transport Science Society .

Honors

On February 15, 1985, Weigelt was awarded an honorary doctorate ( Dr.-Ing. Honorary ) from the University of Stuttgart for “outstanding scientific achievements in transport, especially in the further development of local public transport”. The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Surveying had applied for the award, and Gerhard Heimerl gave the laudation . Up to this point in time, Weigelt had published around 60 papers and given almost 100 lectures worldwide.

On July 11, 1994, he received the Federal Cross of Merit First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. His services were recognized as part of his work at the Federal Railway Directorate in Nuremberg.

In 1957 he received the Schinkel Prize .
