Hoven ( Dürener Platt Hoave ) is a district of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia . The district in the northwest has been part of the city of Düren since 1972.

location

In the south, Hoven borders on Mariaweiler , in the east on Birkesdorf , in the north on Merken , in the west on Echtz . The Rur forms the border to Birkesdorf. The Lendersdorfer mill pond flows through the village .

General

The center of Hoven

The place has 1,915 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2017). The chairman of the district committee is Ralf Freiberger. There is a primary school and a kindergarten in the village , as well as almost all shops for daily needs. The jewel of the place is the "Hovener Mitte" on Arnold-Decker-Platz. The middle of the roundabout is crowned by a model of the old Hovener chapel, which was demolished in 1977 as part of the new church building.

On Arnold-Decker-Platz there is, in addition to the memorial plaque for favors from the two world wars, a boules court and a public bookcase. This is housed in an old British telephone booth. Numerous benches invite you to linger under the shady trees.

In addition, there is a memorial stone on the square named in honor of Arnold Decker, which is intended to commemorate the same.

Decker was mayor and later an honorary citizen of the community of Mariaweiler-Hoven .

history

It is believed that Hoven was settled by the Sunuk people. This West Germanic tribe settled mainly in the Rhineland in the 1st and 2nd centuries. The thesis that the Sunuker lived in Hoven is based on the discovery of a consecrated stone of the deity " Dea Summuxal ". This deity is assigned to the Sunukern.

Hoven was already settled in Roman times. On the Priesberg on the northern outskirts of the Ruraue, the Heidenburg was excavated as early as 1879 , a Roman temple with the basic dimensions 21 × 19 m.

Hoven is mentioned for the first time in 1359. The then Duke Wilhelm von Jülich entrusts Emond von Hoven with the fishing in the pond in front of his house to Hoven.

The municipality of Mariaweiler-Hoven came to the city of Düren on January 1, 1972 as part of the municipal reorganization .

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche, in Hoven, with a separate bell tower.

The new Herz-Jesu-Kirche , inaugurated on April 29, 1972, was designed by the Düren architect Helmut Lüttgen and has space for almost 500 people. Their unusual appearance is particularly striking. It consists of an exposed concrete skeleton with red brick walls.

The predecessor model of today's Herz-Jesu-Kirche was a devotional chapel, it was built in 1832 on what is now Arnold-Decker-Platz and was subordinate to the parish of Mariaweiler until 1909. The chapel association founded in 1909 built a new chapel according to the plans of the Cologne architect Forthmann, which was inaugurated in 1912. During the Second World War, the chapel was so badly damaged that it was decided to rebuild it in 1948/49. From March 11th to 18th, 1977 the chapel was demolished due to static problems.

traffic

On January 1, 1901, Hoven was opened up by the Düren Railway with its meter-gauge railway line from Düren to Merken , which was later extended to Pier and Inden. Traffic ceased on June 30, 1965.

Today, local passenger traffic is ensured on the road by the Düren circular railway , since January 1, 2020 Rurtalbus . The lines 206 and 216 connect Hoven every 30 to 60 minutes with Düren.
