Hugh van Cutsem

Hugh van Cutsem ( July 21, 1941 - September 2, 2013 ) was an English landowner, bank manager, businessman and horse breeder.

Life

Hugh Bernard Edward van Cutsem was born on July 21, 1941. His father, Bernard van Cutsem (1916–1975), was a millionaire horse trainer and breeder. His mother was Mary Compton. The van Cutsems were Roman Catholic and of Flemish origin. The family had moved to England in the 19th century.

He attended Sunningdale School and Ampleforth College , a Roman Catholic boarding school in Ampleforth, North Yorkshire, and graduated from the University of Cambridge .

Career

Van Cutsem worked as an investment banker at Hambros Bank . He later founded his own company and acquired other companies, including a storage company.

heritage

Van Cutsem inherited the Northmore Farm in Exining, near Newmarket in Suffolk, from his father in 1976 . He also owned a 4,000 acre property in Norfolk , best known for its private hunting events. In 2001 the property had 35 pairs of Triele (plover), a very rare species of bird. He also owned a cabin and moorland on the North Yorkshire - Cumbrian border. In the 1990s he sold his father's farm in Exining and acquired the Hilborough Estate, where he relocated his horse breeding. In 1994 he won a Country Landowners' Association Award for restoring an old barn on the Hilborough estate. It was Prince Charles who presented the award.

Van Custem was a founding member of the Countryside Alliance , a nonprofit conservation organization. He was a key fundraiser for the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust and chairman of the Countryside Business Trust. Van Custem was also appointed to the Council of the National Trust .

Private life

On June 10, 1971, he married Emilie Quarles van Ufford in the Guards Chapel in Wellington Barracks. Emilie Quarles van Ufford was born in the Netherlands as the daughter of Jonkheer Pieter Quarles van Ufford. Hugh and Emilie had four sons.

  • Edward Bernard Charles van Cutsem (born 1972) married Lady Tamara Katherine Grosvenor in 2004, daughter of Gerald Grosvenor, 6th Duke of Westminster and Natalia Grosvenor, Duchess of Westminster. They had two sons and a daughter.

  • Hugh Ralph van Cutsem (born 1974) married Rose Nancy Longhorne Astor in 2005. Rose was born to David Waldorf Astor (who is a grandson of Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor ) and Clare Pamela St. John. They had three children together.
    • Grace Emilie Clare van Cutsem (born 2007) who was one of the flower girls at Prince William and Catherine Middleton's wedding .

  • Nicholas Peter Geoffrey van Cutsem (born 1977) married Alice C. Hadden-Paton on August 14, 2009, who was born the daughter of Cavalry officer Nigel Hadden-Paton and the sister of actor Harry Hadden-Paton.
  • Florence van Cutsem (born 2014); was bridesmaid at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding .
  • William Henry van Cutsem (born 1979) attended Ampleforth College and married Rosanna Ruck-Keene on May 11, 2013. He is the godfather of Prince George of Cambridge .

The family rented Notes Hall on the Queen's Sandringham Estate in Norfolk for ten years . They later moved into a neo- Palladian country house, which was designed by the architect Francis Johnson in Hilborough and was located on their property.

A devout Roman Catholic , he built a chapel near his Hilborough residence for family occasions with guest preachers. But he also regularly attended mass at Our Lady of Pity in Swaffham with his family . In 1993 he was made a Knight of the Sovereign Order of Malta .

He was a friend of Charles, Prince of Wales, from university . His son Edward, whose godfather was Prince Charles, was Page at the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. His granddaughters Grace van Cutsem and Florence van Cutsem were flower girls at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton that year 2011 or at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018.

funeral

Van Cutsem died on September 2, 2013 at the age of 72. His funeral took place in Brentwood Cathedral and was held by Thomas McMahon , Bishop of Brentwood . Each of his four sons gave a speech. Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor delivered the eulogy and the choir sang a " Pie Jesu ". It was attended by Charles, Prince of Wales, his sons William, Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall , Andrew Parker Bowles, Richard, 2nd Duke of Gloucester , Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester , Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein , his wife Marie Kinsky von Wchinitz and Tettau , Ralph Percy, 12th Duke of Northumberland , Gerald Grosvenor, 6th Duke of Westminster , Natalia Grosvenor, Duchess of Westminster and Lady Tamara Grosvenor.
