Hugo Schmölz

Hugo Schmölz (born January 21, 1879 in Sonthofen , † April 27, 1938 in Cologne ) was a German photographer .

After an apprenticeship in photography in Kempten and various intermediate positions (including Zurich , Munich , Berlin , Mannheim ), he opened a portrait studio (with Eugen Bayer ) in Cologne-Nippes in 1911 . He focused on architectural photography , especially for the non-profit public limited company in Cologne .

In 1903 he married Juliane Rödle. The marriage resulted in two daughters and a son ( Karl Hugo Schmölz ).

Hugo Schmölz was buried in the North Cemetery in Cologne (hall 10, grave no. 119a / b).

Hugo Schmölz was known for being able to create architectural recordings that were extremely difficult to achieve.

“[...] the interior of a power plant on Lake Constance was to be photographed, namely the turbine hall and the machines in front of a glass wall - a backlit situation that architecture photographers still fear today. Hugo Schmölz solved the problem by completely covering the glass front with black paper, exposing it to the rest of the daylight in the room for several hours, and finally removing the paper for a very short exposure time. The picture ... on the negative format 30 x 40 cm - must have had some success, [...] "

Clients were u. a. the following architects: Dominikus Böhm , Hans Heinz Lüttgen , Joseph Op gen Oorth , Edmund Bolten , Martin Kießling , Jacob Koerfer , the architectural association Karl Wach & Heinrich Rosskotten , Dickerhoff, (Bonntor market hall), Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot , Hermann von Berg , Bruno Paul (Kaufhaus Sinn, Gelsenkirchen, Kaufhaus Sinn, Essen, Aula University Bonn and Haus Jahn, Soest) and Wilhelm Riphahn . On behalf of GAG Immobilien, he photographed many of their newly built housing estates in the Cologne area.

In addition, there were advertising photos for the following companies: Worringer, Bauer and Schaurte , Gerling , Soennecken , Stüssgen , Norton, Glaswerke.
