Human Centipede (Original title: The Human Centipede (First Sequence) ) is a Dutch horror film from 2009. Producer and director was the Dutchman Tom Six .

action

The action takes place in Germany in the Mettmann district . The protagonist , Dr. Heiter, kidnaps a truck driver at a motorway service station , whom he has overpowered with a stun gun while relieving himself in the bushes, into his house. Later, the two tourists Lindsay and Jenny are on their way to a party when they have a flat tire on a deserted forest road. After being molested by an old man, they decide to run through the woods to find a phone somewhere and call roadside assistance as their cell phones have no reception.

You finally reach the spacious house of Dr. Cheerful, who lets you in and, after a fake phone call to the breakdown service, numbs you with Rohypnol dissolved in water . When you wake up you are in an operating room in the basement of the house. The truck driver is lying next to them, but Dr. Cheerfully is murdered by lethal injection because he is incompatible with the women in terms of the surgical technique. A little later, Dr. Cheerfully returns to the rest of his prisoners and brings the also drugged Japanese tourist Katsuro with him. He then explains precisely to the three of them that and how he will sew them together on the mouth and anus , and begins with preparations for the operation. While he is drugging Katsuro and Jenny, Lindsay is able to break free and tries to escape together with Jenny, but is then shot by Heiter with a drug gun. He then begins the operation, which he successfully completes.

From now on he trains his "creature" like a dog. During one of these "training units" there is probably the most striking scene in the film when Katsuro has to defecate for the first time and Lindsay is forced to swallow his excrement as a result. While Dr. The two criminal investigators, Kranz and Voller, appear with a medical check-up. Cheer forbids them to search his house without a search warrant , but the two announce that they will come back within 20 minutes with a valid court order and then enforce it. Heiter's attempts to numb her beforehand in order to replace the dying rear limb of his "centipede" with the two policemen and thus to expand his creation to four limbs, fail. Because of this he seems to lose his self-control for a short time.

After the police took over the house of Dr. Having left Cheerful for the time being, he panics and storms into the basement, where he no longer meets his victims in the sickroom. They ambush him in an adjoining room; Katsuro stabs his foot and knee with a scalpel, rendering him largely immobile. Katsuro then uses explanatory gestures to ask the two women to coordinate their movements and to attempt to escape. However, you do not take the right route and the attempt to escape ends in the bedroom of the house. For the time being, it becomes a dead end because the exits from there are closed to the outside. Dr. Cheerful follows them after he has overcome the shock of the injury and wants to bring his creature back under his control.

When he presents his trio in the bedroom, located Katsuro decides with a splinter from a glass that he tried briefly pursue previously with a bedside lamp, suicide to commit, although an escape or overpower Dr. Heiter with the lamp would probably be possible after telling Heiter that he deserved it because he had beaten his wife and children for years. While Katsuro dies, Voller and Kranz return and Dr. Cheerfully, still weak, escapes into the swimming pool room. There he stabs Voller with a scalpel and gains power over his weapon. Meanwhile, Kranz discovers the human chain in the bedroom and also runs into the pool room, where he is first shot twice by Heiter, but can then kill him before he falls into the pool, dying. Jenny dies of blood poisoning as Dr. Cheerful no longer cared about an inflammation at her seam, and Lindsay is left alone in the middle of the lifeless human chain.

There are language barriers between the characters, so Katsuro speaks and understands only Japanese, the Americans only English. The dialogues of Dr. Heiter take place in both German and English.

criticism

The film received controversial criticism. It only ran in select theaters in the United States . In Germany, the film premiered at the Fantasy Film Festival in August 2010, but then did not find a distributor who was willing to bring the film to the cinemas.

“What sounds like silly trash is a seemingly homely mind game with an indeed bizarre-disgusting premise. Dieter Laser may be playing the role of his life to which the other actors just have to react. [...] It remains a sick film that flirts with exploitation like art film and will ultimately more likely satisfy the friends of the obscure than the daring party horror-watchers. "

“Little can be said about the other actors. You spend 90% of the film lying on beds screaming in despair or whimpering, mouth-to-butt, naked and mumbling on four legs. It is not demanding, but rather commendable that actors could be found for such humiliating roles. It is much more demanding to watch it in the length of a feature film [...] The naked tri-Siamese mumblebee is annoying [...] as well as emerging, unsewn logic holes. "

“Much of this horror scenario can only be found in the mind of the beholder, otherwise the sick scenarios would probably not be legally representable at all. A meaningless and unmotivated 'conversation' far below any disgust limit. "

Production and rental

In Germany, after its premiere at the Fantasy Filmfest, there was no distributor who was willing to distribute it for over two years. In May 2012 the film was released as direct-to-DVD / Blu-ray under FSK 18 as a cut version of the original and can be compared with an American R-version .

In 2016, BHM Mailorder from Austria published an official T-shirt for the film, which was limited to 100 pieces.

Sequels

In 2011 Tom Six shot the sequel The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) with Laurence R. Harvey in the leading role. As the end of the trilogy , The Human Centipede III (Final Sequence) appeared on May 22, 2015, in which Dieter Laser again in a role, but not as Dr. Cheerful, returned. Due to inconsistencies with the script, Laser initially refused to play the role, so Six was forced to postpone filming, which should begin in June 2012. After clarifying the discrepancies that had arisen, Six and Laser finally came to an agreement, so it could be announced that Laser will appear as the protagonist.

Entrance into pop culture

Unlike in Germany, where the film is only known to a few horror connoisseurs, the film was received with great international response, which came as a great surprise for many because, in contrast to contemporary horror films that were released at the same time, some of which were very expensive to produce (e. B. Saw VI , Zombieland , Dead Snow , REC 2 and others), is surprisingly bloodless, has barely visible special effects, the three abductees are shown naked almost the entire time, but are staged in a very unotic way and also in the international version little english is spoken. As a result, it drew many professional and semi-professional imitations and parodies, musicals and even porn films and was even parodied in the South Park episode HUMANCENTiPAD in 2011 , as well as in the 2014 music video Matrix by Kool Savas . There is also a title called Human Centipede on the album Carlo Cokxxx Nutten 3 by rapper Bushido , released in 2015 . John Oliver makes several references to the film in his Sunday evening show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver , including the protagonist in the film Deadpool 2 .
