IC 5178 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Aquarius on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 240 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 7220 and IC 1435 .
The object was discovered by Herbert Alonzo Howe on October 20, 1897 .
