I Knew It Was You is a documentary by the US director Richard Shepard about the US actor John Cazale (1935–1978).
background
The title I Knew It Was You is a well-known phrase from the film The Godfather II , which Michael Corleone (Al Pacino ) says to Fredo Corleone (John Cazale) after he became aware of him betrayed him to his enemies. The documentary describes Cazale's short but successful acting career. The film was co-produced with actress Meryl Streep , who was engaged to him from 1976 until his death in 1978. Furthermore, directors and fellow actors Cazales have their say. At the beginning of the film, filmmakers show passers-by in New York City a "family photo" of the Corleone Mafia family from the world-famous first part of The Godfather with Sonny ( James Caan ), Vito ( Marlon Brando ), Michael (Al Pacino) and Fredo (John Cazale). It is remarkable that many people addressed recognize "Fredo" but no one knows the actor's name. The interviewees describe details from the films Cazales, his artistic class, his feeling for the camera and the personality outside the film studio. Meryl Streep and other loved ones described how they reacted to the cancer diagnosis in 1977 and how John finished shooting the film Going Through Hell.
Publication and recognition
I Knew It Was You premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and had its television premiere in Spain on June 9, 2009.
criticism
Victoria Large wrote that I Knew it Was You was a wonderful retrospective of the career. The main strength lies in the loving memories of his friends. Film Threat's Don R. Lewis praised the film for its portrayal of Cazale's career. However, he misses the representation of the person Cazales outside the camera.
