Ian Murray (Bishop)

Ian Murray (born December 15, 1932 in Lennoxtown , † January 22, 2016 ) was a Scottish clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Argyll and the Isles .

Life

Ian Murray, the oldest of four children, entered the National Junior Seminary of St Mary's College in Blairs in 1946 . In 1950 he was one of eleven Scottish priesthood students who studied philosophy and theology from 1950 to 1956 during the reconstruction of the Royal Scots College (Real Colegio de Escoceses) in Valladolid, Spain . The seminary was closed during the Spanish Civil War . On March 17, 1956 he received in the seminary chapel in Valladolid by the Bishop of Galloway , Joseph McGee , the ordination . Murray then worked in the Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh at St. Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh , then private secretary to Gordon Cardinal Gray . After serving as a curate in the parishes of St. Kenneth in Lochor and St. Columba in Edinburgh, he was appointed Vice-Rector of the Royal Scots College in Valladolid by the Scottish Bishops' Conference . In 1970 he became the first college chaplain at the newly formed University of Stirling . In 1978 he took over the parishes of Our Lady and St. Bride in Cowdenbeath and St. Ninian in Restalrig . From 1987 to 1994 he was Rector of the Royal Scots College in Valladolid and directed its relocation to Salamanca . In 1995 he took over the pastors' posts in Galashiels and Falkirk and was appointed vicar general.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Argyll and the Isles on November 3, 1999. The Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh, Keith Patrick O'Brien , donated him episcopal ordination on December 7th of that year ; Co- consecrators were Thomas Joseph Cardinal Winning , Archbishop of Glasgow , and Archbishop Pablo Puente Buces , Apostolic Nuncio to the United Kingdom . On October 16, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

He was a Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
