Ihor Jewdokymowytsch Turtschyn ( Ukrainian Ігор Євдокимович Турчин , Russian Игорь Евдокимович Турчин Igor Yevdokimovich Turtschin * 16th November 1936 in Sofijiwka , Odessa Oblast , Ukrainian SSR , † 7. November 1993 in Bucharest , Romania ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet handball coach .

Life

Ihor Turchyn graduated from the Pedagogical Institute in Kamianets-Podilskyi . In 1959 he began to train handball with a group of beginners in Kiev , from which the team of Spartak Kiev was founded in 1962 .

He coached and directed this club from 1962 to 1993 and won the USSR national championship 20 times and the women's EHF Champions League 13 times between 1969 and 1988 , making the club the most successful club in history in the Champions League. He also coached the Soviet women's national handball team , with which he was twice handball world champion and twice Olympic champion. In 1976 he was named the best coach in the world. He and his team are listed in the Guinness Book of Records for outstanding performance in sport .

Turchyn died on November 7, 1993 in Bucharest during a break from playing against Rapid Bucharest of a heart attack and was buried in the Berkowezkyj cemetery in Kiev. He had been married to handball player Sinajida Turtschyna since 1965 , who succeeded him at Spartak Kiev after his death. The marriage resulted in a son (* 1983) and a daughter (* 1971).
