Ines Doujak (* 1959 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian artist who works with the means of installation , photography and conceptual art . She took part in documenta 12 with her work Victory Gardens .

Life

Ines Doujak studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and received her diploma there. In her photographs, installations and performances, she examines the construction and role of stereotypes in relation to gender roles and racism . Her work is shaped from a feminist perspective . As part of her first solo exhibition at the Vienna Secession, she took part in the Rainbow Parade, the Viennese counterpart to Christopher Street Day, with a car she designed .

She took part in documenta 12 with the work Siegesgärten . The themes of the installation were the neo-colonial exploitation of natural resources in developing countries through the appropriation of genetic diversity through the abuse of patent protection on living beings, as well as the use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture, which resulted in the dependence on formerly self-sufficient farmers. In a planting box on stilts, seed bags were attached to plant sticks that were stuck in the ground. Various aspects of biopiracy were shown on the seed bags .

Doujak was first represented by Teresa Hohenlohe at the Vienna gallery , and since 2007 she has been at the Krobath Wimmer gallery, also in Vienna. In 2007 Doujak received the City of Vienna Prize for Fine Arts . In 2017 she was awarded the Carinthian Culture Prize. She lives and works in Vienna .

Controversies in Spain

A paper mache sculpture by the artist led to a heated public debate, showing the naked ex-King Juan Carlos I on all fours having anal sex with the naked Bolivian union leader Domitila Barrios , who in turn has anal sex with a German Shepherd . The controversial sculpture was shown for the first time at the São Paulo Biennale in December 2014. The artist said at the time that the work should “play with power relationships and undermine them”. The director of the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona , Bartomeu Mari , asked the curators of the exhibition The Beast and the Sovereign not to show the work. They refused and demanded either to show all works or to cancel the exhibition completely. Then Mari publicly apologized and offered to resign.
