International Council on Monuments and Sites

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (short ICOMOS , German International Council for heritage conservation ) is an international non-governmental organization for historic preservation, based in Paris .

organization

ICOMOS was founded in Warsaw in 1965 following the signing of the Venice Charter in 1964, the international charter on the conservation and restoration of cultural monuments and complexes .

ICOMOS members are national committees and associations for the preservation of monuments, of which there is one in most of the states that are members of UNESCO :

National committees exist - in different legal forms, depending on the national circumstances - in more than 100 countries. ICOMOS International is financed by contributions from the national committees.

ICOMOS International advises UNESCO on issues relating to the preservation of monuments, in particular the world cultural heritage . For the assessment of natural heritage sites which is International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) responsible. Before the appointment of new sites, it submits an expert opinion on the application for entry in the World Heritage list , makes recommendations for decisions to the World Heritage Committee and checks the state of preservation of already registered World Heritage sites.

ICOMOS is a founding member of the culture protection organization Blue Shield International . In this context, the national and international protection of cultural assets, such as monuments during wars, armed conflicts or disasters, is to be ensured, often together with UNESCO.

Within the framework of ICOMOS, 28 international scientific committees work, which deal with questions of the preservation and restoration of cultural monuments, for example cultural monuments of the 20th century, cultural monuments in the polar regions or intangible cultural heritage.

Since 1982, ICOMOS organized in cooperation with the UNESCO annually on April 18 the International Monuments Day .
