Ioan Ovidiu "Neluțu" Sabău (born February 12, 1968 in Câmpia Turzii , Cluj County ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . As a player, Sabău completed a total of 281 games in the Divizia A , the Honor Division and Serie A . He took part in the 1990 World Cup and the 1996 European Football Championship .

Player career

Ioan Sabău started his career at Universitatea Cluj , the Romanian time in the highest soccer league, the Divizia A played. On March 8, 1986 Sabau came in the away game at Rapid Bucharest for the first time. As a strong right midfielder with a strong dribble, dangerous goal and team support, he quickly caused a sensation nationwide. Under the pretext that he had to do his military service, he was forced to switch to league rivals AS Armata Târgu Mureş during the 1987/88 season , as this club was under the Ministry of Defense. Sabau caused a car accident during this time, in which a person was killed. This incident was hushed up by the Romanian authorities after Sabau agreed to move to the Romanian top club Dinamo Bucharest in 1988 .

During the two successful years at Dinamo, Sabău won the championship and the Romanian Cup in 1990 and reached the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup . After participating in the World Cup, like many other Romanian national players, he left Romania and moved to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Dutch honor division . In Rotterdam, Sabau was only used regularly at the beginning, in his second season he played only 12 games, but won the KNVB Cup in both years . During this time he also joined Jehovah's Witnesses .

Then Sabau left the Netherlands and his path led him to Serie A at Brescia Calcio . Here he became a regular player straight away, but could not prevent relegation to Serie B. During the four years in Brescia the club developed into an elevator team . Sabau's good performances made him a regular for the Romanian national team and led to a nomination for the 1996 European Football Championship . In the same year Sabau left Brescia after the club was almost relegated to Serie C. But Sabau did not fare much better with his new club, AC Reggiana . The club was relegated from Serie A, while Sabau was only used in half of the games. He left Reggiana in 1997 and returned to Brescia, which had just been promoted to Serie A. Sabau could not prevent relegation - mainly because he was hardly used.

In 1998 Sabau turned his back on Italy and joined Rapid Bucharest in his Romanian homeland. There the success returned, and in 1999 Sabau won the Romanian championship again. He was able to repeat this success with Rapid in 2003 after he had helped his hometown club U Cluj as a player-coach to return from Divizia C to Divizia B in the 2000/01 season . After the championship in 2003 Sabau ended his career. As a trainer of Gaz Metan Mediaș , he came to another assignment in 2004.

National team

Sabau played a total of 52 international matches for Romania. He made his debut in the Romanian national football team on February 3, 1988 against Israel . Sabau was appointed by national coach Emerich Jenei in the squad for the 1990 World Cup in Italy and played all four games. Sabau played very successfully as a right midfielder in the World Cup qualification for the 1994 World Cup . However, an injury prevented his participation in the tournament. After only occasional missions, Anghel nominated Iordănescu Sabau for the European Football Championship in England in 1996 , but could not use him because he was injured again. After a comeback in 1999 Sabau ended his international career, but played a decisive role in the successful qualification for the 2000 European Football Championship .

Coaching career

Already during his active career Sabau was active in the 2000/01 season as a player- coach at his hometown club Universitatea Cluj , which he helped after the fall in the Divizia C to rise again. After completing his active career at Rapid Bucharest, Sabau coached Universitatea Cluj for a short time in 2003 and then the second division side Gaz Metan Mediaș from 2003 to 2005, with whom he missed promotion to Divizia A in his last season only because of the poorer goal difference. On June 27, 2005 Sabau took over the coaching post at Gloria Bistrița for four years . In the 2006/07 season he reached a remarkable 6th place and then reached the final in the UI Cup , where the club was just eliminated by Atlético Madrid . On June 28, 2009 he signed with the Romanian runner-up FC Timișoara a three-year contract, from which he resigned in May 2010 after the end of the 2009/10 season.

From September 2010 he coached the FCM Târgu Mureș in League 1 as the successor to Adrian Falub . On September 26, 2011, he resigned from his position after the club had scored only six points in the first eight league games in the 2011/12 season and was also involved in a referee scandal. In the following period, he stayed in the autumn of 2011 for preparatory purposes at some Italian clubs. On March 18, 2012 Sabău returned as the successor to Marius Lăcătuș to relegation-threatened FCM Târgu Mureș. In the summer of 2012 he became the head coach of Rapid Bucharest , but had to vacate his chair in October 2012. In October 2013 he was again head coach in Târgu Mureș. He was released in March 2014.
