Ioana Strungaru (birth name Ioana Crăciun ; born January 4, 1989 in Truşeşti ) is a Romanian rowing athlete . She is a three-time European champion and won three world championship medals in rowing.

Career

In 2004 Crăciun started rowing. Just two years later she took part in the four-four at the junior world championships and finished 12th. In her last junior year, she made the jump to eighth and became junior world champion. From the 2008 season she rowed in the adult area. Between 2009 and 2011, she achieved three medals at the U23 World Championships , while she was also used in the open women's class. At the European Rowing Championships in 2008 she rowed to seventh place with Maria Bursuc in a double scull . Then she managed to jump into the strong Romanian women's eight for two years. With this team Crăciun was European champion in 2009 and 2010 , in addition to two medal wins at the world championships in those years.

With the intensification of training efforts before the upcoming Summer Olympics in London from the 2011 season, she did not make the leap into eighth again. In the sculled quadruple scull , however, she achieved two European Championship bronze medals by 2012 as well as a participation in the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled (Slovenia). At the London Games, Crăciun was not used in any team.

In the new Olympic cycle, Crăciun made it back to the Romanian eighth by participating in the European Championship in double sculls. He won the silver medal at the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju. Crăciun was also part of the eight team in the renewed European Championship victory in 2014 . In 2015 a bronze medal followed at the European Championships and seventh place at the World Championships . At the beginning of May 2016, the Romanian eighth finished fourth at the European Championships . A fortnight later, the Romanians won the last Olympic qualification in Lucerne. At the 2016 Olympic Games , the Romanian eighth won the bronze medal in the line-up of Roxana Cogianu , Ioana Strungaru, Mihaela Petrilă , Iuliana Popa , Mădălina Bereş , Laura Oprea , Adelina Boguş , Andreea Boghian and taxwoman Daniela Druncea .

Crăciun starts for the Botoșani CS club . Your competition weight is around 72 kg. In 2015 she married the former Romanian rower Ionel Strungaru , who was active in international rowing from 2004 to 2014, and has since started under her married name.
