Ivan Alexandrowitsch Kowaljow ( Russian Иван Александрович Ковалёв , English Ivan Kovalev ; born July 26, 1986 in Alapajewsk , Sverdlovsk Oblast , Russian SFSR , USSR ) is a former Russian track and road cyclist .

Athletic career

Ivan Kowaljow began his career in 2006 with the Russian Continental Team Omnibike Dynamo Moscow . In races of the World Cup in 2005/06 and 2006/07 he won the scratch races . In the team pursuit he finished third with Alexander Serow , Nikolai Trussow and Iwan Rowny behind Recycling.co.uk and the German national team.

Two days before the start of the 2010 UCI Track World Championships in Melbourne , Kowaljow was hit by a car 500 meters from the Dunc Gray Velodrome and broke his shoulder, preventing him from participating in the World Cup.

In 2011 he was the Russian champion in the Omnium and together with Yevgeny Kowaljow , Alexei Markow and Alexander Serow in the team pursuit. In the same line-up, his team won the team pursuits at the 2011/12 Track Cycling World Cup in Astana and Beijing . Between 2009 and 2013 he also had various successes on the road. At the UCI Track World Championships 2014 in Cali ( Colombia ) he was world champion in scratch . He then ended his cycling career.

The cyclist Yevgeny Kovalev is his younger brother. At times they start in the team pursuit in the same team.
