Boat on the trailer

The J / 22 is a sporty keelboat that is used for both recreational sailing and as a regatta yacht. The largest fleets are in the USA, Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, France, South Africa and Germany. The boat was designed by Rod Johnstone for the company JBoats, USA and is still offered by them today. The boats are currently produced by licensees in the USA, Italy and South Africa. The boat has been on the market since 1983. Around 1650 boats had been manufactured by the end of 2011.

General

The J / 22 can be sailed by two people in the leisure sector without any problems, but a third crew member is required for regattas. The boat has a 7 foot (≈ 2.1 m) long cockpit . A low center of gravity and the relatively large boat width contribute to safety. The sails consist of a jib , mainsail and spinnaker . Optionally, a larger genoa can be used instead of the jib . The boat cannot take part in class regattas. Due to the low weight and the dinghy-like underwater hull , it is a very agile boat that starts running even with little wind. Since the sail area is rather moderate compared to sports boats (like Melges 24 ) and the boat can be trimmed very well, with the appropriate experience of the crew, up to approx. 25 knots of wind can be sailed without reefing. With a trailer weight of approx. 1200 kg and a width of 2.44 m, the J / 22 can be easily towed across Europe with a mid-range car.

hull

Hull and deck of the J / 22 are in Balsa - Sandwich - laminate executed. The keel is made of lead and is attached to the hull with bolts. The mast stands on the deck and is supported by a tube on the keel pig . There are two airtight tanks in the boat that make the boat unsinkable . They are located under the cockpit and in the foredeck so that the boat can assume a stable swimming position when it is full. The rudder is the mirror mounted and can be removed.

Rig

The J / 22 is equipped with a partial rig with swept-back spreaders, which does not require backstays . The jib overlaps only minimally (105%), so that it can be sheeted within the shrouds . The bending of the mast is determined by the shroud tension, the backstay and the boom vang . The main sheet is attached to a traveler in the cockpit . The mainsail can also be trimmed with a cunningham and outhaul . The double-translated jib sheet is now diverted to windward in most boats via additional blocks , so that the existing winches are no longer used in regattas. The spinnaker is operated conventionally, the boat is equipped with barber haulers .

Cruising sailing

In the basic configuration, the J / 22 has almost no interior fittings. However, it is possible to build a double berth in the foredeck and two dog berths under the benches . In addition, the boat can be equipped with a removable rail . Together with a motor mount, which is attached to many boats, the ship can be used for smaller tours.

Regatta sport

The J / 22 is a strict one-design class recognized as the International Keelboat Class by the ISAF (International Sailing Federation) . Dimensions, weights and fittings are regulated within narrow limits. This means that older boats are still fully competitive if they are properly maintained. The fact that the choice of materials for rigging and sails is limited means that the running costs of running a regatta are not too high.

The crew weight on regattas is limited to 275 kg, the number of crew members is not limited. There are no riding aids such as belts or harnesses. The aim of these regulations is to limit the physical demands on the crews in order to enable regatta sailing with the J / 22 to a larger group of sailors. This makes it possible for all-women crews or mixed crews to compete very successfully in regattas.

At the international level there are world championships (mostly in the USA, South Africa or the Netherlands), continental championships are held in North America and Europe, and since 2009 there has been a European ranking list , which includes regattas in France, the Netherlands and Germany . At world championships there are sometimes more than 100 boats at the start. In Europe there are active class associations in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and France. The largest European regatta series in terms of numbers and sailing level is sailed in the Netherlands, with ships from Germany regularly taking part there.

The German ranking list was determined in 2012 on six German, one French and one Dutch regatta. The series included the world championship on the French Atlantic coast.

The boat was shortlisted as a women's match race boat for the 2012 Olympic Games . However, the decision was made in favor of the newly designed Elliott 6m .

In addition to a series of ranking regattas, the World Cup will take place in Germany for the first time in 2015. It will be organized by the German Class Association as part of the Travemuende Week from 19.-25. July aligned.

Well-known J / 22 regatta sailors

One of the most famous sailors who has successfully sailed on a J / 22 is the South African Ian Ainslie , who participated in the Louis Vuitton Cup 2007 as a strategist for the South African team Shosholoza . He was J / 22 world champion in 1997 and 2001. He was also third in the World Cup in 2002 and 2007.

The three-time American Olympic medalist (2 × silver and 1 × gold) Paul Forester became world champion in the J / 22 class in 1996.
