Józef Wieniawski (born May 23, 1837 in Lublin , † November 11, 1912 in Brussels ) was a Polish pianist and composer.

Life

The younger brother of the violinist Henryk Wieniawski studied from 1847 to 1850 at the Paris Conservatory with Pierre Zimmermann , Charles Valentin Alkan and Antoine François Marmontel . He then refined his piano technique with his uncle Edouard Wolff , in Weimar in 1855/56 with Franz Liszt and from 1856 to 1858 with Adolf Bernhard Marx in Berlin.

After performing as a partner with his brother for several years, he decided to start his own career as a piano virtuoso. On concert tours through Europe, he performed his own compositions - including the Piano Concerto in G minor - the works of composers Ludwig van Beethoven , Franz Schubert , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann and Carl Maria von Weber . After Liszt he was the first pianist to publicly perform all of Frédéric Chopin's etudes .

He also had the works of contemporary Polish composers in his repertoire such as Stanisław Moniuszko , Antoni Stolpe , Moritz Moszkowski , Edouard Wolff , Carl Tausig and Władysław Żeleński . As a chamber musician, he has performed with the most famous instrumentalists and singers of his time, including Pablo de Sarasate , Henri Vieuxtemps , Apolinary Kątski , Eugène Ysaÿe , Jenő Hubay , Leopold Auer , Joseph Joachim , Alfredo Piatti , Ignacy Jan Paderewski , Louis Diémer , Pauline Viardot- Garcia and Marcelina Sembrich-Kochańska .

In addition to the piano concerto, Józef Wieniawski a. a. a piano sonata, 24 studies, two concert studies, a ballad in E flat minor, polonaises, mazurkas, barcaroles, impromptus, waltzes and miniatures.

While teaching at the Moscow Conservatory from 1866 to 1870, Józef Wieniawski had up to 700 students. In 1871 he was one of the founders of the Warsaw Music Society. After further concert tours, Wieniawaski married the Dresden banker's daughter Melania Hilsheimer in 1889. In 1892 the family settled in Brussels, where Wieniawaski made a name for himself primarily as an interpreter of Chopin's works. As a music teacher, he was particularly in demand in the upper classes of society. Contrary to what several sources say, he never taught at the Brussels Conservatory. The library of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels is owned by the extensive Józef Wieniawski fund , which was bequeathed to the institution by his eldest daughter Elisabeth Wieniawski. The collection consists of numerous manuscripts and prints by the musician.

Józef Wieniawski died at the age of 75 and was buried in the cemetery in the Brussels district of Ixelles / Elsene .
