Jewish cemetery (Lüxheim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish cemetery of Lüxheim , a district of the municipality of Vettweiß in the Düren district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), is hidden between trees on the slope of the eastern Neffelbach bank , right on the boundary with Eggersheim .

The cemetery was created in the first half of the 19th century when around 15% of the population in Lüxheim were Jews . The community also included fellow believers from various surrounding villages who built a synagogue in Lüxheim at the turn of the 20th century . In the November pogroms of 1938 the synagogue was burned down and the cemetery was desecrated. All gravestones were overturned at that time, and many had their writing plates destroyed with a pickaxe . After the Second World War , 35 tombstones were put up again. According to the legible inscriptions, the oldest burial was carried out here in 1883 and the last in 1934.

A memorial stone erected after the war for three dead bears the inscription Perished in the concentration camp .
