Jürgen Ulrich (born November 21, 1939 in Berlin ; † June 8, 2007 in Bielefeld ) was a German composer and university professor .

Life

Jürgen Ulrich's first attempts at composing began at the age of 10. At the age of 15 he wrote his first school opera. The first radio broadcast followed at 17 and his pupil symphony was performed at high school. From 1953 to 1963 he studied composition , music theory , ear training and piano at the Detmold University of Music , with Johannes Driessler and Giselher Klebe , among others . His professional career took him as a piano teacher at the Frankfurt Youth Music School and as a composition and piano teacher at the Jugenheim Pedagogical Institute (Bergstrasse). From 1967 to 1968 he was a lecturer for composition and ear training at the Bergisches Konservatorium Wuppertal; afterwards he was appointed to the Hochschule für Musik Detmold , where he had been professor for composition and music theory since 1974 . Since 1978 he was head of the seminar for music school teachers and independent music teachers, from 1989 to 2005 Vice Rector of the university. He retired in September 2005.

Between 1982 and 1991 he organized several series of talks on New Music for pupils, parents and teachers, mostly at music schools and other institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia . He was a member of the German Composers' Association (DKV); since 1978 member of the German Tonkünstlerverband (DTKV). Here he acted as state chairman in North Rhine-Westphalia since 1993 and since 1999 as vice-president in its federal presidium. In addition, he was a member of the main committee “ Jugend musiziert ”. Since 1984 Ulrich has also been involved in further training courses for extracurricular youth education: at various music schools, the Vlotho youth farm , the Lippischer Sängerbund and the Landesmusikakademie NRW eV Heek-Nienborg.

As a composer, Jürgen Ulrich won numerous prizes at music competitions: 1964 and 1967 in Stuttgart, 1990 in Uelzen, 1977 in Braunschweig and Hamm and 1980 in Aachen.

Jürgen Ulrich was married and had three children.

Jürgen Ulrich's works were mainly published by the former publisher Wilhelm Hansen, whose exploitation rights are partly held by Sikorski and Chester Music in London / New York, by Möseler Verlag, Schott Music , Moeck Musikinstrument + Verlag , Zimmermann Musikverlag and Grenzland -Verlag Th. Hüsgen, Charles Verlag and the Trekel and Waldkauz publishers. The AG Musik in Ostwestfalen-Lippe also published various compositions by Jürgen Ulrich as part of their practical contributions.
