Jairus Kipchoge Birech (born December 14, 1992 in Uasin Gishu District ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in obstacle running.

Athletic career

Birech first attracted international attention in 2011 when he won the silver medal in the obstacle course at the Junior African Championships in Gaborone and finished fourth at the Africa Games in Maputo . In 2012 he started at several meetings of the IAAF Diamond League . Among other things, he was third at the Golden Gala in Rome, second at the Athletissima in Lausanne and won the British Athletics Birmingham Grand Prix . In 2013 he won the prestigious Cross Internacional de Itálica in Santiponce near Seville and came second in the obstacle race at Weltklasse Zürich .

In the 2014 season, Birech dominated the IAAF Diamond League almost at will. He won six out of seven races and therefore the overall ranking in the obstacle course. He stayed below the 8-minute mark for the first time at the Van Damme Memorial in Brussels and, with a winning time of 7: 58.41 minutes, put himself at the top of the world's best of the year. In the same year he won the African Championships in Marrakech and the Continental Cup at the same location. He also won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow .

In 2015 Birech won the obstacle races at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix , the Bislett Games in Oslo and the Areva Meeting in Paris Saint-Denis. At the World Championships in Beijing , however, he finished only fourth behind his compatriots Ezekiel Kemboi , Conseslus Kipruto and Brimin Kiprop Kipruto .
