Jamil Mardam
Jamil Mardam Bey ( Arabic جميل مردم بك; * 1893 in Damascus , Ottoman Empire ; † March 30, 1960 in Cairo , Egypt ) was an Ottoman Arab militant and Syrian politician who served as two-time prime minister, foreign minister, defense minister, interior minister and health minister.
Life
Jamil Mardam was born in Damascus in the then Ottoman Empire in 1893 into an aristocratic Sunni - Muslim family. He descends from the Ottoman general, statesman and grand vizier Lala Kara Mustafa Pascha . Mardam studied at the School of Political Science in Paris and in 1911 was the founder of al-Fatat , the leading opposition party in Ottoman Syria.
In 1916 he worked for the armed uprising of Hussein ibn Ali against Ottoman rule. He was sentenced to death, but managed to escape and hide. In 1918 he returned to Syria and took part on the side of Faisal I in the delegation to the Paris Peace Conference . After the fall of Faisal I and the destruction of the Kingdom of Syria by the now French authorities, Jamil Mardam Bey was sentenced to death again on July 24, 1920. He then fled to Jerusalem under the British League of Nations mandate for Palestine and waited there until an amnesty was declared for him in the French League of Nations mandate in Syria in 1921 .
In 1927 he was finally a co-founder of the National Bloc . After the founding of the Syrian Republic in 1930, Jamil Mardam Bey was appointed Prime Minister on December 21, 1936. He stayed that way until February 18, 1939. When Syria became independent from France in 1942, he was reappointed Prime Minister on December 29, 1946. This time he only stayed that way until December 17, 1948.
