Jan-Philipp Sexauer (born March 28, 1967 in Karlsruhe ) is a German gallery owner in Berlin .

Life

education

After completing his community service , Jan-Philipp Sexauer studied law in Freiburg, West Berlin and Munich. In addition, he took seminars in literary studies and philosophy. During his legal clerkship in Berlin he was a. a. at the Volksbühne Berlin under Frank Castorf , at the Komische Oper Berlin and the German Embassy in Kuala Lumpur . In 1997 he lived in New York City. From 1998 to 2013 he worked as a lawyer in Berlin. He taught students at the Humboldt University and trainee lawyers at the Supreme Court , was a member of the Legal Examination Office and published specialist articles. In addition to his work as a lawyer, he curated art exhibitions. In 2012 he stopped working as a lawyer and in 2013 founded a gallery for contemporary art in Berlin.

Exhibition maker

In 1994 he organized his first art exhibition at the Goethe-Institut Bandung with art students from the Hochschule Institut Teknologi Bandung , which took place together with a photo exhibition of the Goethe-Institut about environmental damage. This gave the students the opportunity to show artistic works that critically reflected on environmental policy during the Suharto dictatorship. He later curated exhibitions in Berlin , Leipzig (2010) and Detroit (2012) a. a. with Norbert Bisky , Jonas Burgert , Eberhard Havekost , Gregor Hildebrandt , Alicja Kwade , Jonathan Meese , Lea Asja Pagenkemper and Norbert Schwontkowski .

Gallery owner

In 2013 he founded the gallery SEXAUER , which represents international artists of a younger generation. He stopped working as a lawyer. In 2014 he showed the last solo exhibition by the painter Herbert Volkmann. In addition to the gallery artists Futo Akiyoshi, Thomas Feuerstein , Ornella Fieres, Jay Gard , Isabelle Graeff, Philip Grözinger, Alexander Iskin, Caroline Kryzecki and Jeewi Lee, he presented works a.o. in solo and group exhibitions. a. by Björn Dahlem , Martin Eder , Gerrit Engel, Yang Fudong , Asta Gröting , Anselm Reyle , Michael Sailstorfer , Roman Signer , Rirkrit Tiravanija , Jorinde Voigt , Franz Erhard Walther , Rebecca Warren , Erwin Wurm and Thomas Zipp . He writes catalog texts and makes short films about the gallery exhibitions. In 2015, together with Andreas Greiner and Ursula Ströbele, he published the book 24h Skulptur - notes on time sculptures on an expanded concept of sculpture.

In 1998 he founded the Blade Night Berlin skate event , which took place from 1998 to 2000. In 2000 it was the largest skate event in the world with more than 60,000 participants. It was registered as a meeting and had the goal of enforcing the recognition of skates as a vehicle in the sense of the road traffic regulations. The Berlin CDU , SPD and the Greens then spoke out in favor of model tests in 2000 and recognized skates as a means of transport. Since 2008 he has also been organizing the Night of the Pawn artists' night chess tournament .

Awards

Sexauers Galerie was awarded the Berlin Gallery Prize in 2017.
