biography
General
Jan Łazarski was born as the son of the farmer Wawrzyniec Łazarski and his wife Julie Iwelska. His maternal grandfather, Piotr Iwelski, participated in the January uprising in 1863 . After six years of school he began training as a locksmith with Fabryka Kotłów Parowych W. Fitzner i K. Gamper . In 1912 he took up studies at the Technical University of Ilmenau ; because of the outbreak of the First World War , he could not finish his studies. During the war, he lived with relatives in France and Switzerland, where he worked as a mechanic and ran his own repair shop for medical devices.
In 1919 Łazarski returned to Krakow. At first he worked as a locksmith in various companies until he founded his own locksmith's shop in the late 1930s, which he ran until the end of his life. During the German occupation after 1939 he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned for eight months. He was probably involved in the Polish Home Army .
Athletic career
In 1919 Jan Łazarski won the Kraków- Mogilany road race . He then became a member of the KKCM Krakow . He raced on the road as well as on the track . For rail training, he often had to travel to Warsaw or Łódź , as there were no opportunities in Krakow. In 1924 he started together with Tomasz Stankiewicz , Franciszek Szymczyk and Józef Lange in the team pursuit at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris . The Polish four surprisingly won the silver medal behind the favored Italians; this was the first Olympic medal in cycling for Poland. Łazarski also denied the 50 km race on the track, which he could not finish, as well as the sprint tournament , where he was eliminated in the first lap.
In the same year he became Polish sprint champion and was able to repeat this success in 1925 and 1926. He also held the Polish record over 200 meters with 12.6 seconds. In 1929 he ended his active cycling career, but remained connected to cycling as a functionary and received several awards.
Łazarski died on August 11 in his hometown of Kraków and was buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery.
