Jan Brandt (writer)
Jan Brandt (* 1974 in Leer , East Frisia ) is a German journalist and writer .
Life
Jan Brandt, who grew up in Ihrhove , studied history and literature from 1995 to 2003 at the University of Cologne , Berlin and London and is a graduate of the German School of Journalism in Munich . He wrote his master's thesis on Das Schwarze Korps , the weekly newspaper of the SS. From 1999 to 2003 he was editor of the box of literature The Outside of the Element . He writes regularly for the Berlin city magazine Zitty , the literary magazine Edit and Die Zeit .
His debut novel Gegen die Welt made him known in one fell swoop in 2011. The provincial epic traces the fall of a village in East Friesland and addresses the recent history of the old Federal Republic under the sign of change and globalization. Gegen die Welt was nominated for the German Book Prize (shortlist) 2011 and reached number 35 on the Spiegel bestseller list. The book received a lot of attention from literary criticism, as the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung called it a “huge, impressive novel” - Der Spiegel even spoke of the “book of books”. The book Gegen die Welt is characterized by numerous micro- and macro-typographical peculiarities that are even significant when reading.
His second book, Death in Turin, is a travelogue that tells of a reading trip to Italy. In it, Brandt self-ironically describes the everyday life of a writer between scholarships and readings and takes a critical look at Italian culture and the German literary scene.
Brandt's book A House in the Country / An Apartment in the City describes processes of awareness that came to mind when the author reflected on his experiences, on the one hand when looking for an apartment in today's Berlin, on the other hand when dealing with memories of his great-grandfather's house in danger of being demolished.
He is a member of the PEN Center Germany .
Brandt moved to Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg in 1998 and initially lived there in a simple apartment.
