Jan Lisiecki ( ˈjɑːn ˌlɪ'ʃɜtskɪ , born March 23, 1995 in Calgary , Canada ) is a classical pianist who became known at a young age through concerts and CD releases.

biography

Jan Milosz Lisiecki was born in Canada to Polish parents. He studied piano at the Mount Royal University Conservatory from the age of five and performed with an orchestra for the first time at the age of nine. On the recommendation of the school board, he was able to skip four classes. In January 2011, he passed his final exam at Western Canada High School in Calgary. He graduated from the Glenn Gould School in Toronto , where he was admitted as a scholarship holder in September 2011.

In August 2008 and August 2009 Lisiecki, then 13 and 14 years old, played Chopin's piano concertos in Poland, together with the Sinfonia Varsovia. Recordings of these performances were released on CD by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in 2010 and immediately brought Lisiecki international attention. On the occasion of this recording, the magazine Diapason praised Lisiecki as a "virtuoso devoid of manners with a powerful and above all irresistible natural style of playing". The BBC Music Magazine praised Lisiecki's “mature musicality”, his “finely distilled” interpretation and his play “with brilliant technique and idiomatic pathos”.

In February 2011 Jan Lisiecki and Deutsche Grammophon signed an exclusive recording contract. From September 2012 to January 2015 Lisiecki was an artist in the “Junge Wilde” series at the Dortmund Konzerthaus. In the 2017/18 season he presented his solo program Nachtmusik for the first time with works by Chopin , Schumann and Ravel , which the press described as "intoxicating", "unforgettable" and "almost metaphysical sound experience". Together with baritone Matthias Goerne , he presented a cycle of lesser-known Beethoven songs in 2020 , including at the Salzburg Festival .

Lisiecki has worked with the New York Philharmonic , the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Philadelphia Orchestra , the San Francisco Symphony , the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia , the London Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and many other international orchestras worked together. He often plays under the direction of Antonio Pappano , Yannick Nézet-Séguin or Krzysztof Urbański and has developed relationships with Daniel Harding and the late Claudio Abbado .

Lisiecki supports various charities, including the David Foster Foundation, the Polish Humanitarian Organization and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In June 2008 he was appointed National Youth Ambassador by UNICEF Canada, and in 2012 he was appointed UNICEF Ambassador.
