Jarzinho Saul Emmanuel Pieter (born November 11, 1987 in Willemstad , Curaçao , Netherlands Antilles ; † September 9, 2019 in Port-au-Prince , Haiti ) was a Curaçao football player who played in the position of goalkeeper .

Club career

First years without a title win

Jarzinho Pieter was born on November 11, 1987 in Willemstad, the capital of what was then the Netherlands Antilles. When and with which club he started his football career is not known. At the latest when he was about 19 years old, he came to RKSV Centro Dominguito in 2007 with games in the Sekshon Pagá , the highest soccer league in Curaçao. In the 2007/08 season he and his team ranked fourth in the final ranking of the regular season and qualified with the teams in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for the so-called Kaya 4 , the last round before the group format official league final, the Kopa Antiano , at which the master and runner-up of the Sekshon Pagá, the master and runner-up of the Bonaire League meet and played for the overall championship of the Netherlands Antilles. Equal on points with SV UNDEBA and CSD Barber , RKSV Centro Dominguito only made it to third place due to a poorer goal difference and thus barely failed to make it into the season-closing Kopa Antiano. In the Kopa Polar 2007 , the soccer cup of Curaçao, Pieter and his team were eliminated from the tournament in round 2 against CRKSV Jong Colombia .

He finished the regular championship of the 2009 game year with his team in first place with 48 points; in the subsequent extended Kaya 6 , the club from the capital Willemstad could no longer hold its performance, ended up in fifth place and thus again failed to participate in the championship-winning Kopa Antiano. In the following season 2009/10 Centro Dominguito would have made it to the first place of the regular season again, if the team had not deducted three points for it after they had used a player who was actually banned in the game of the third championship round. Thus, the team landed in second place and qualified again for the Kaya 6 . This time the team around the 1.87 m goalkeeper was able to prevail against the competition and moved into the following Kaya 4 as first place in the Kaya 6 . In this, a third out of four places was not enough for the subsequent participation in the final Kopa Antiano. The Sekshon Pagá 2010/11 was similar , when Centro Dominguito again took first place in the regular season, but lost a lot of performance in the subsequent Kaya 6 and came in last. About a month and a half before the start of this season, the political structure of the Netherlands Antilles had been dissolved, so that there would have been no more Kopa Antiano anyway.

Series champion from 2012

However, this changed suddenly in the following game year 2012 , when the RKSV Centro Dominguito was by far the most superior club of the Curaçaoischen first class. Centro Dominguito was unbeaten in 24 games in the regular season (19 wins, 5 draws) and was 26 points ahead of the runner-up. In the subsequent Kaya 4 , the dominance of Pieter and his team continued. After three games, the team made it unbeaten in the final of the Curaçao Championship, in which the team met second in the Kaya 4 , SV UNDEBA. A goal by Kenny Kunst in the 27th minute of the game gave RKSV Centro Dominguito its first championship title since 1987 on September 30, 2012, which was also only the second championship title in the top division in the club's 60-year history at that time.

It was similar for Pieter and his team in the following season , when after 18 league games only one was lost and the team again ranked first in the regular championship. In the subsequent Kaya 6 , Centro Dominguito also only lost one of five games and moved into Kaya 4 as first place . In this, the team got two wins and a draw from three games, which secured the entry into the final against second-placed CSD Barber. In this, in which Pieter was also used, the capital city club won the match 2-1 against the club from the village of Barber and was again Curaçao football champions. Towards the end of the year, Pieter made the leap to the national soccer team of Curaçao, where he made his debut three days after his 26th birthday.

The Sekshon Pagá 2014, however, developed into a largely balanced season. Several teams had the potential to fight for one of the top places in the table, of which, however, the RKSV Centro Dominguito and the SV Centro Social Deportivo Barber were the two more dominant clubs. One point behind Barber, Pieter and Centro Dominguito moved into Kaya 6 below . Unbeaten, the Roman Catholic sports club made it to Kaya 4 , ranking first ; Barber had only seven points and third place. As first and second of the Kaya 4 , Centro Dominguito and Barber moved into the championship-decisive final game with equal points. In the game played on December 7, 2014, Pieter and his team lost just 1-0.

Unbeaten playing year 2015

In the Sekshon Pagá 2015 , the goalkeeper and his team remained undefeated. With 17 wins and one draw from 18 championship games, Centro Dominguito moved into first place in Kaya 6 , again secured first place with two wins and three draws and also achieved first place in the following Kaya 4 with one win and two draws . The RKSV Centro Dominguito then won the championship-winning final against CSD Barber 4-2.

After the Sekshon Pagá was renamed Promé Divishon at the beginning of the 2016 game year , the RKSV Centro Dominguito, together with the CSD Barber, was still one of the dominant Curaçao football clubs. At the end of the regular championship you were ranked 1 again and only had to subordinate yourself to Kaya 6 . A third place was enough for the qualification for Kaya 4 , in which the capital city club took second place behind the RKSV Scherpenheuvel , another Roman Catholic sports club. In the final on November 6, 2016, Centro Dominguito was again able to beat Scherpenheuvel 2: 1 and was champion of the top soccer league for the fifth time in the club's history.

Pieter could look back on a similar result at the Promé Divishon 2017 ; Centro Dominguito and Barber were no longer the two leading clubs on the island, but both were able to stay in the top half of the table. Afterwards, Centro Dominguito won both the Kaya 6 and the Kaya 4 and won the final game in the dr. Antoine Maduro again prevailed against Scherpenheuvel (2-0) in Kintjan near Willemstad, which meant the sixth championship title in the club's history, as well as the fifth title for Jarzinho Pieter.

In the Promé Divishon 2017/18 he made it with his team to third place of the regular season; the former arch rival CSD Barber even landed in 8th place. In Kaya 6 , Centro Dominguito only took fifth place, which meant an early departure for the first time in several years.

Change to SV VESTA

After at least eleven first division seasons for the RKSV Centro Dominguito, Pieter moved within the league to the runner-up of the past season, SV VESTA, before the start of the 2018/19 season . With this, he completed a largely mixed season and in the end just made it into the following Kaya 6 in sixth place . In this the sport Voetbal. Vriendschap Eendracht Sterken Tegen Alles , the full name of the club, took second place behind RKSV Scherpenheuvel and was also ranked second in Kaya 2 behind Scherpenheuvel. A 0-0 draw at the end of regular time and at the end of the Extra time brought both teams to a penalty shoot-out in the final game , which SV VESTA won 3-1 and became a Curaçao football champion for the first time in the club's history.

National team career and death

Shortly after he became champion for the second time with the RKSV Centro Dominguito in 2013, the national coach Ludwig Alberto brought Pieter to the national soccer team of Curaçao . Three days after his 26th birthday, he made his senior national team debut in his team's first game in the 2013 ABCS tournament against Aruba , a 2-0 win. In the final two days later against Suriname , which ended in a 3-1 defeat of Curaçao, Pieter once again guarded the goal of his home country for the full 90 minutes. Then it took until September 2014 before Pieter was considered again for the Curaçao national team. On the occasion of the qualification for the Caribbean Championship 2014 Ingemar Pieternella brought him into the Curaçao squad and used him in all three games of Group 4 in the first round. As first place, Curaçao made it into the second qualifying round, in which they finished second behind Martinique . Pieter was also used in all three group games by Pieternella.

After successfully qualifying, the national team took part in the finals in Jamaica in November 2014 for the first time in its history . Due to his consistent performance in the qualification, Pieter also acted in the finals as the goalkeeper of his home country and was used in all three group games of his team over the full game. However, Curaçao failed in Group A against Trinidad and Tobago , Cuba and French Guiana and ended up with 0 points and a goal difference of 5:10 in last place in Group A, which meant the early elimination from the tournament.

In the following year, Pieter was replaced by Eloy Room as the goalkeeper; Also Zeus de la Paz and Marcello Pisa came this year to missions in the national team before Eloy Room from 2016 acted as sole goalkeeper. Pieter was de la Paz's substitute in at least two international matches in 2015 and then had to wait a year before being called back to the national team. From the first round of the 2017 Caribbean Cup / qualification for the 2017 Caribbean Cup , Pieter acted as a substitute for Eloy Room and then - with the exception of a few games - sat on the bench of the Curaçao national football team for international matches. On March 22, 2017, Pieter played in a non-official and not recognized by FIFA friendly game against El Salvador . After successfully qualifying for the Caribbean Championship, Curaçao even won the finals in Martinique when it was only the second participation and thus qualified for participation in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017 , in which the team was the last in Group C, however, without scoring a point or a goal have retired early. During this time, Pieter was always the substitute for Rooms.

Even after that, Pieter was considered the second goalkeeper behind Room, who had made the leap to the United States after participating in the Gold Cup, in a series of friendly matches, qualifying for the CONCACAF Nations League 2019/20 and the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019 . At the beginning of September 2019 he started with the national soccer team of Curaçao in the CONCACAF Nations League 2019/20 and on September 7th he was again on the bench behind Eloy Room in a 1-0 win over Haiti . A day later he flew to the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince with the national team for the second group match, the second leg against Haiti . On the same day, Pieter complained about being unwell. The next morning he was found dead in his hotel room at the Marriott in Port-au-Prince; he had died of cardiac arrest . The game against Haiti was held despite Pieter's death and ended in a 1-1 draw; Before the kick-off there was a minute's silence in memory of the deceased. After the goal to make it 1-1, the Curaçaoi goalscorer Elson Hooi held a T-shirt with the number Pieters on the back and the words “LEGEND” in the cameras. After his death, the Jarzinho Pieter Kids Fund Project was set up in his honor .
