Jean-Jacques Elshoecht

Jean-Jacques Elshoecht , also Carle Elshoecht (born May 10, 1791 in Bergues , † February 27, 1856 in Paris ), was a French sculptor .

Life

Elshoecht was the son and student of the painter and sculptor Jean-Louis Elshoecht . In 1822 he went to Paris, where the sculptor and draftsman François Joseph Bosio became his teacher. Between 1824 and 1853 Elshoecht exhibited many of his sculptural works at the Salon de Paris , including mainly portraits. In 1824 he won a third class medal there and a second class medal in 1827. He received government and church commissions in large numbers. One of his students was Paul Duboy .

Elshoecht also made tombs that were erected in the Parisian cemeteries Père Lachaise and Cimetière de Montmartre , including those for Jean-François Lesueur and Joseph Ottavi . Several French museums have works by Elshoecht in their holdings, such as the Musée de Picardie in Amiens (marble bust of Napoleon ), the Musée de Dieppe in Dieppe Castle (bust Charlotte Corday ), the Musée de la Chartreuse in Douai (bust Victor-Joseph Delcambres , Bas-Relief Marceline Desbordes-Valmores , Statuette Jean Barts ), the Musée du Louvre in Paris (Statue Ferdinand Philippe d'Orléans, 'Duc de Chartres ', Statuette Therese Elßler as Queen Mab in Romeo and Juliet ), the Musée des beaux-arts in Dole (male bust) and museums in Lyon, Marseilles, and Versailles. The largest collection of Elshoecht's works is in the Musée communal in Dunkirk . A statue of Mathilde of Flanders stands in Paris' Jardin du Luxembourg .
