Jerry Mathers (born June 2, 1948 in Sioux City , Iowa ) is an American actor and former child actor .

Life

Mathers was featured in a television commercial when he was two . In 1952 he had his acting debut as a child actor in the western comedy Pale Face Junior alongside Bob Hope and Jane Russell . He appeared in a number of feature films throughout the 1950s , including as the son of Shirley MacLaine's character in Alfred Hitchcock's black comedy Always Trouble with Harry .

In 1957 he got the lead role of Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver in the sitcom You Should Be Grown Up, which he played in 235 episodes until 1963. Through this role he gained enormous popularity not only in the United States; the series became a huge success in many other countries as well. During this high point of his career, he released the single Wind up Toy in 1962 , which was not particularly successful. After graduating from high school , he served in the Air National Guard from 1966 to 1969 during the Vietnam War . The US media briefly circulated a false death report when a soldier of the same name had fallen. He then studied at the University of California at Berkeley . In 1974 he received his bachelor's degree in philosophy . He worked in the banking and real estate business for the rest of the 1970s.

After you had to be an adult, he was rarely seen in front of the camera in the 1960s and 1970s, including guest appearances in the television series Lassie and Batman . In 1983, a television film was produced under the name Still the Beaver - a sequel to Growing up one should be . In addition to Mathers, Barbara Billingsley , Tony Dow , Ken Osmond and Frank Bank appeared from the original cast. Shortly thereafter, a new sitcom was produced under the name My Dear Biber , until 1989 Mathers appeared in 102 further episodes as Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver . In 2007 he made his Broadway debut as Wilbur Turnblad in the musical Hairspray .

Mathers made in the United States, among others, advertising for General Electric , AOL , Coca-Cola and Jim Beam , temporarily recruited Kellogg's with his photo on cornflakes packings. His first two marriages were divorced and the second marriage had three children. He has been married for the third time since 2011. He was diagnosed with diabetes in the early 1990s .
