location

Jerusalem is located in the north of the city between the districts of Helba and Welkershausen on gently sloping terrain at the foot of Kiliansberg (488 m) at an altitude of between 310 and 380 meters. To the west, the federal road 19 leads past directly . A country road runs through the district to the neighboring community of Utendorf .

history

Jerusalem in 1895

At the beginning of the 19th century, Meiningen Minister of State Christian Ferdinand von Könitz had an extensive park with a villa and manor called Jerusalem built, which was located south of Welkershausen in the western part of today's district on today's Bundesstraße 19. This property, which was rebuilt and expanded in 1913, was destroyed in the last days of the Second World War. In 1936 the Wehrmacht had the Barbarakaserne built in the eastern part within a few months . The 74th Artillery Regiment of the 2nd Panzer Division and then the 103rd Artillery Regiment of the 4th Panzer Division moved in there. From 1939 it served as a hospital and branch of the Kassel Army Equipment Office. From 1945 to 1991 the 117th Guards MotSchützen Regiment of the 8th Guards Army of the Soviet Army occupied the barracks.

Starting in 1967, the “residential district 20” Utendorfer Straße, located near the Helba district, was built in the course of the construction of the Robotron , known as the microelectronics plant. There were 27 four- to six-storey buildings with social facilities. In 1980 the construction of the "residential district 21" Kiliansberg began , which closed the gap between Utendorfer Strasse and Welkershausen. For this purpose, agricultural facilities of VEG Welkershausen had to be demolished. Another 18 six-storey buildings and the necessary public facilities were built here. The renters of the apartment blocks in both residential areas were the workers' housing association (AWG) and the municipal housing association (WBG). In 1989, around 6,000 people lived in both residential areas.

Since the fall of the Wall , the two residential districts have been referred to as the "Jerusalem district". A Polytechnic High School was in the Moritz-Seebeck - high school , another for regular school converted "On Kiliansberg". In 1991, Stadtwerke Meiningen were re-established and established their headquarters in Jerusalem. The “Robotron Meiningen” plant was transformed into a GmbH and was continued under the name “Robotron Dünnschichttechnologie GmbH” until 1998, when it was taken over by Schott AG . The company used part of the production halls until production was relocated to the USA in 2007. In 1995, the Meiningen District Office moved into the former administration building of the Robotron. The Moritz-Seebeck-Gymnasium merged with the Henfling -Gymnasium in 1997 and since then has borne its more traditional name. Due to high unemployment and the departure of many higher earners, the district developed into a social problem district in the 1990s.

At the end of the 1990s, a district center with a shopping center and public facilities was built around the newly built Obertshäuser Platz. A parking garage for residents has also been created. From 2000, the empty Barbarakaserne was torn down and the city designated a new, now completely built-up home area on the northern cleared part of the barracks site.

Due to moves, relocations to other parts of the city and a decline in the birth rate, the population fell to 3,239 today (2015). This forced the two major landlords in Meiningen, AWG and WBG , who maintain 466 and 1,302 apartments respectively in Jerusalem (as of 2010), to dismantle some prefabricated buildings. One apartment block on Utendorfer Straße and eight apartment blocks on Kiliansberg with a total of around 500 apartments were demolished. To date, almost all of the existing apartment blocks have been refurbished and partially rebuilt by the major landlords according to the latest standards. In 2013/14, a public park for leisure and recreation was created in place of the two last demolished apartment blocks with a forest garden. Furthermore, the social conflicts in the district could be significantly reduced.

Natural monuments

Bat tower

A special feature is the bat tower built in 2006/2007. In 2003, in the junction of a six-story apartment block, which was originally to be completely dismantled, builders discovered a large colony with 1,500 animals of the great mouse- eared bat , around 500 animals of the noctule bat and some specimens of pygmy , broad-winged and two-colored bats . The Upper Nature Conservation Authority decided that an entrance to the building had to remain permanently as a 6-storey tower and that the remaining roof space should retain or regain its suitability for the mouse-eared colony. The tower is also used by nature conservationists as a quarter and research facility.

Facilities

In addition to a supermarket, Jerusalem is home to the district office, the district archive, the Henfling grammar school , a primary school, a regular school, an AWO nursing home, the Multihalle sports and cultural facility , a bowling alley, a youth center opened in 2007 and a traffic education garden . Stadtwerke Meiningen has its headquarters in Utendorfer Straße.
