Hinterjessen is a district of Pirna , the district town of the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district .

The district is located in the north of the city on the orographic right side of the Elbe on the Wesenitz . Neighboring districts are Zatzschke in the southeast, Copitz in the southwest, Graupa in the northwest and Liebethal in the northeast. The row village was laid out in the second half of the 16th century and first mentioned in 1587 as "New Jeßendorf". Settlement growth was encouraged by the construction of the Jessen Vorwerk , from which Vorderjessen later emerged.

The place name Jessen is derived from the Old Sorbian word jeseń or jaseń for ash .

The basic rule was in 1604 the lords of the manor Pillnitz awarded. In the further course of the 17th century, Hinterjessen and Vorderjessen came to the Schönfeld manor , where they remained until the abolition of the manor . From the 17th century the administration of the place was incumbent on the Dresden office , before that the Stolpen office . In 1856 the Pirna court office was responsible. On the basis of the rural community code of 1838 , Hinterjessen gained independence as a rural community. This was part of the Pirna administration in 1875 until it was incorporated into Pirna in 1923 . Vorderjessen, however, was incorporated into Neugraupa on January 1, 1924; this community was united in 1933 with Groß- and Kleingraupa to form the community Graupa , which in turn was incorporated into Pirna on January 1, 1999.

Around 1840 there were three local mills on the Wesenitz: Grundmühle, Talmühle and Dietzmühle. On November 1, 1898, a school was inaugurated in Hinterjessen, the school district of which also extended to Vorderjessen.
