João José Burke

João José Burke OFM (originally John Joseph Burke , born March 16, 1935 in Teaneck , New Jersey , United States , † March 14, 2006 in Palmas ) was an American religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Miracema do Tocantins .

Life

After graduating from high school in Englewood, João José Burke first attended the seminary in Callicoon, New York, from 1952 . In August 1954 he entered the Holy Name Province of the Franciscans in Paterson . He made his first profession on August 13, 1955 and his perpetual profession on August 20, 1958 . After studying at St. Bonaventure University and Holy Name College in Washington, DC , the Apostolic Delegate to the United States, Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi , donated the sacrament of ordination to him on February 25, 1961 .

After ordination, he worked in pastoral care in Boston and in training in Callicoon. He also earned a master's degree in Classical Philology from St. Bonaventure University. In 1964 he signed up for the mission in Brazil . Here he was active in pastoral care, from 1967 to 1970 reigning the seminary in Anápolis , where he was also custodian from 1978 to 1987 , as well as head of the Franciscan mission there. From 1987 to 1995 he was Novice Master and Guardian in Catalão .

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor bishop of Miracema do Tocantins on January 4, 1995 . The Archbishop of Newark , Theodore Edgar McCarrick , ordained him episcopally on March 25 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Miracema do Tocantins, Jaime Collins CSsR , and the Bishop of Jataí , Benedito Domingos Vito Coscia, OFM.

With the resignation of Jaime Collins' CSSR on February 14, 1996, he succeeded him as Bishop of Miracema do Tocantins. João José Burke died of internal bleeding two days before his 71st birthday.
