Benedito Domingos Vito Coscia OFM (born August 10, 1922 in Brooklyn , New York , † April 30, 2008 in Goiânia , Goiás , Brazil ) was an American religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Jataí in Brazil.

Life

Benedito Domingos Vito Coscia studied after his high school graduation from St. Francis College in Brooklyn from 1943 to 1945 philosophy at St. Bonaventure College in Olean, New York, and from 1945 to 1949 theology at Holy Name College in Washington, DC he graduated in parallel from 1945 to 1948 a master's degree in Latin American history.

He joined in 1943 the Congregation of the Franciscan at and received on 11 June 1949, the sacrament of Holy Orders in Washington, DC From 1950 to 1957 he worked as a vicar in the Brazilian Anápolis active, then as a priest and rain at the local seminary. From 1957 to 1961 he was a teacher in Pires do Rio .

on June 8, 1961 Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Jataí . He was episcopal ordained by the Bishop of Brooklyn , Bryan Joseph McEntegart , on September 21 of the same year in Brooklyn; Co- consecrators were Tomás Roberto Manning , Bishop of Coroico , and Eustace John Smith , Vicar Apostolic of Beirut . His episcopal motto was "Pax et Bonum".

Coscia was responsible for the religious education of children and young people in the Região Central-Oeste (Midwest region) of Brazil in Goiás, Mato Grosso , Mato Grosso do Sul , Distrito Federal Brasília . He was also a member of the commission that set up a new location for the Brazilian Bishops' Conference CNBB. He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

In 1999 his resignation was granted by John Paul II . Until 2000 he was still employed as an Apostolic Administrator in Jataí.

Coscia was honored with a Legum Doctor (LL.D.) (Doctor of Law) from St. Francis College, Brooklyn, and St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York.

He was buried in the Jataí Cathedral, which was built during his tenure.
