Patricia Josephine "Jo" Clayton (born February 15, 1939 in Modesto , California , † February 13, 1998 in Portland ) was an American writer of science fiction and fantasy .

Life

Clayton grew up in simple circumstances on a farm. She attended the University of California at Berkeley ; she graduated summa cum laude in English literature from the University of Southern California in 1963 . She worked as a teacher for years, starting in Bell , a small industrial town near Los Angeles . In 1969 she converted to the Catholic Church and joined the Sisters of Notre Dame of Mount Carmel , a teaching congregation in New Orleans . At this time, Clayton began to write in addition to her job as a teacher. Just before she was due to make her profession , she left the community. She gave up her job as a teacher and lived on the income from her writing work.

After being robbed several times, life in New Orleans seemed too dangerous to her and she moved to Portland, Oregon in 1983 . Jo Clayton died two days before her 59th birthday of a form of bone marrow cancer that she had battled for a year and a half. While in hospital, she wrote the second part of the Drums of Chaos trilogy and started the third (it was finished by Kevin Andrew Murphy ).

Patricia Jo Clayton was the author of a total of 35 books and a large number of short stories. In total, your books have sold over 1,250,000 times. Her novels, which are located on the border between science fiction and fantasy, are usually not particularly original in terms of motifs and plot, but often impressive in the figure drawing, especially the representation of strong female characters.

The best known are the novels of the Diadem series, a space opera about a mysterious artifact, the aforementioned "Diadem". The wearer of the diadem, the girl Aleytys, is a healer who can activate special powers with the help of the diadem. In search of her mother's super race, she experiences numerous adventures and comes into all sorts of dangerous and humiliating situations, including captivity and slavery, from which she can free herself again and again with the help of her powers.

In 1977 she received the Phoenix Award for her life's work .
