Joachim KM Fait

Joachim Karl Martin Fait (born April 1, 1921 in Ruda / Upper Silesia , † March 17, 1993 in Berlin-Köpenick ) was a German art historian .

biography

As the son of a customs secretary, Joachim KM Fait grew up in various cities in Germany. After attending primary school in Mainz for four years , he became a student at the secondary school there . From 1933 he attended high school in Treuburg and graduated from high school there in 1939.

After compulsory labor, military service and captivity, he worked briefly in mining and agriculture in the area around Quedlinburg . From 1947 he studied philosophy, art history, classical and Christian archeology, German and Nordic studies at the University of Greifswald . In 1952 he completed his studies with the diploma exam. From 1952 to 1960 he was a research assistant at the Caspar David Friedrich Institute for Art Research at the University of Greifswald. On 28 July 1954 he was at the University of Greifswald with the dissertation The North German Bettelordensbaukunst between the Elbe and Oder doctorate , by KH Clasen was supervised. From February to December 1954 he was part-time museum director of the local museum of the city of Greifswald .

From March 1, 1960 to March 31, 1986 he worked in various positions at the Institute for Monument Preservation , Berlin office. He initially lived in Berlin-Treptow and later moved to Schöneiche near Berlin.

In the field of restoration , he had a teaching position at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art for the 1971/72 academic year .

On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone (October 11, 1165) , the structural repairs and the restoration of the original interior character of the Brandenburg Cathedral took place under his scientific direction as a monument conservationist , which began in 1962 with earth drilling and the aim of securing the foundation. He had made a decisive contribution to counteracting the further deterioration of the Brandenburg Lent Shawl through a scientifically and technologically sound treatment. The restoration was carried out in the Central Research Center for the Restoration of Historical Tissues Krefeld in 1967/68, the head of which was Dr. Renate Jaques was.

He was the author of several volumes on the topography of German art monuments , especially in Berlin and the Mark Brandenburg .

An important result of his art-historical research was the decoding of the capital pictures as the story of Daniel ( Book of Daniel in the Bible ) in the ambulatory of Magdeburg Cathedral . In addition, he explained the parable meaning of the Daniel story for the 13th century and made a connection to the history of that time.

He continued to work on the subject of cemetery and tomb art, which had been of interest to him since the 1970s, in retirement. The results of this work found their way into the scientific literature.
