Location and surroundings

The summit and most of Monte Rogòrias are located in the territory of the political municipality of Astano (Switzerland). The on the Rogòriahang at just over 1000  m above sea level. M. situated Alpe di Monte lies partly in Astano and partly in an exclave of the political community Bedigliora (Switzerland), but has been used historically agricultural primarily of Astano. The majority of the real estate on the Alp is still owned by the community of Patriziato di Astano . Other parts of the mountain are in the Swiss municipalities of Curio and Novaggio . The state border with Italy is around 330 m as the crow flies and around 135 meters in altitude in a north-westerly direction from the summit. The area on the Italian side belongs to the municipality of Dumenza .

The southern slope of Monte Rogòrias is initially very steep, but then flattens out from around 1100  m above sea level. M. clearly and also has a flat summit plateau. To the northeast of the summit, the terrain sinks to the Forcola or the Passo di Monte Faëta at 1117  m above sea level. M. from where it then goes back to the Cücch at 1518  m above sea level. M. and then to Monte Lema at 1619  m above sea level. M. increases. The Monte Rogòria is mostly forested up to the summit, with the vegetation below around 900  m above sea level. M. is dominated by sweet chestnuts and above by beeches and oaks . It is rich in water and drains on the Swiss side over the Lisora into the Tresa and on the Italian side over the Rio di Colmegna into Lake Maggiore .

There is a good view at the top. For example, in the east you can see Monte San Salvatore , Monte Generoso and Lake Lugano, and in the west Lake Maggiore with the Borromean Islands , the Monte Rosa massif and, if the visibility is good, even the tip of the Matterhorn .

Routes to the summit

From the south, Monte Rogòria is accessible with a white-red-white marked mountain hiking trail (level of difficulty T2 according to the SAC hiking scale ), which runs in the northwest of the village of Astano at the Elvezia restaurant at around 640  m above sea level. M. begins and then to a fork in the road at 926  m above sea level. M. increases. From there, a hiking trail bypasses the summit in the east via the Alpe di Monte , while a second, somewhat more demanding trail leads past the summit in the west. The two paths come northeast of the summit near Forcola at 1117  m above sea level. M. back together, from where further mountain hiking trails lead to Monte Lema, to Miglieglia or to Italy. The summit itself is not accessible via marked trails.

history

Until the middle of the 20th century, the mountain was about 900  m above sea level. M. hardly forested and at this height consisted mostly of pastureland . In 1850, for example, around 4,000 goats were said to have grazed on Monte Rogòria , while the number of Astano residents was around ten times lower at 395.

A section of the former "la Ramina" border barrier, which the Italian state built in the 1890s to combat smuggling , ran over the western flank of Monte Rogòria. It was completely on Italian territory and reached up to Monte Lema. In some places the remains of the barbed wire fences can still be seen today.
