Life

Kanitz was a son of the main pastor at the Lübeck St. Gertrud Church Johannes Kanitz (1878-1939). Now he attended the illegal seminary of the Confessing Church in Zingst and Finkenwalde , where he came into contact with Dietrich Bonhoeffer , from whom he received essential theological impulses. After his ordination as a pastor, he was assistant preacher in Klinkow in 1936 and in Hohenseefeld from 1937 . He was one of the founders of the Brotherhood of Young Theologians in Berlin-Brandenburg . During the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and fell into French captivity , during which he was employed as a camp pastor.

After a time in Lübeck, he was from 1947 to 1956 as a clergyman at the Evangelical Church Community Berlin-Giesensdorf , in whose Petruskirche he preached. In the following years from 1956 to 1969 he was pastor at the Evangelical parish "Zur Heimat" in Berlin-Zehlendorf . Here he also worked out a meditation for a work of art in his church: In the main room of the church there is a relief band on the west wall that depicts striking scenes from the Old Testament . It comprises a total of 15 pictures that were designed by the Berlin sculptor Waldemar Otto between 1957 and 1959 and cast in concrete.

In March 1958, Kanitz sparked offense at the Church Broadcasting Department of North German Radio with a sermon in which he called on his audience to say a clear no to the federal government's nuclear armament plans. Since 1961 he worked in the communist front organization Christian Peace Conference . Since 1974 he has been a board member and since 1976 chairman of the "Action Group Solidarity World".

In 1983 Kanitz worked on a film production for Hessischer Rundfunk about the martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He also made a name for himself as a Bible interpreter .

Since 1979 Kanitz lived in retirement in Berlin.
