Jobourg is a village and a former French commune with 520 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Manche department in the Normandy region . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the Canton of La Hague .

With effect from 1 January 2017, the previous municipality of Jobourg was merged with the other 18 municipalities of the former Communauté de communes de la Hague to form a Commune nouvelle called La Hague and has the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Beaumont-Hague.

geography

Jobourg is on the Cotentin Peninsula and even on a smaller peninsula called La Hague that juts out into the English Channel. Alderney is approximately 15 km away. The community adjoined

From Cape Nez de Jobourg you have a wonderful view of all the Channel Islands ( Jersey , Guernsey and Sark ).

geology

Jobourg lies in the Armorican massif . And there the oldest rocks in France come to the fore.

Toponymy

Jobourg is derived from Scandinavian: jorth (cf. German earth ) and borg (fortification, cf. German castle). François de Beaurepaire believes that this could be traced back to the Anglo-Saxon eordhburg with a similar meaning.

economy

The controversial La Hague reprocessing plant is located on part of Jobourg .

The French government is investigating the construction of ocean current power plants in the Strait of Alderney (just like before Barfleur ), in one of the strongest tidal currents in Europe between Cape Cap de la Hague and the British channel island of Alderney .

The CROSS-ma Jobourg, operated by the French Navy, monitors the traffic separation area between Mont-Saint-Michel and Cape Antifer near Le Havre .

Because of the picturesque landscape, tourism has developed favorably in recent years.
