During the Seven Years' War he fought in the battles near Prague , Kolin , Kunersdorf , Liegnitz , Torgau , Reichenbach and the battles near Holitsch and Crenow. In addition, Uttenhofen took part in the sieges of Breslau, Olomouc and Dresden. part. In the time he was on 22 October 1757 Ensign , on May 12, 1759 second lieutenant , and on May 29, 1762 First Lieutenant .

After the war, Uttenhofen was promoted to captain and company commander until December 24, 1773 . As such, he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 . On August 4, 1785 he was promoted to major and on April 6, 1786 was given command of the 1st Battalion. During the Prussian campaign in Holland in 1787 he took part in the battle near Amstelveen. On December 27, 1791 he was commander of the regiment's grenadier battalion, and in this capacity was promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 27, 1792 .

During the First Coalition War , Uttenhofen fought in the cannonade of Valmy , the battle of Pirmasens , the storm on Bitsch and the battles near Kettrich, Burweiler, Roth and Ruppertsberg. During the battle on the Schätzel, he was shot in the left shoulder, hit and bayonet stabbed to the head, and was then taken prisoner. At that time he was on July 30, 1793 commander of the infantry regiment "von Lattorff" and on January 25, 1794 colonel .

On June 1, 1799 he received the order Pour le Mérite at a parade in Petershagen near Minden. Due to his injuries, he was appointed commander in Würzburg on July 8, 1799, with a pension of 600 thalers. On July 1, 1800 he was appointed major general. On November 1, 1802, he was transferred to Plassenburg near Kulmbach as a commandant, in addition to which he received a pension of 1000 thalers as well as free lodging. Uttenhofen tried in vain to put the fortress in a combat-ready condition. Also a personal conversation with the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. didn't help. However, he now got a formal rejection of his request. In the run-up to the Fourth Coalition War on October 8, 1805, he received an assignment of weapons and ammunition and an engineer officer, but no other soldiers, and the engineer officer came only a few weeks before the war broke out. It had only 629 men of crew (mostly disabled) when the Bavarians arrived on October 10, 1806 with 10,000 men. Uttenhofen initially refused to surrender because he knew nothing of a declaration of war. On November 25, 1806, he handed the fortress over to the Bavarian Colonel Count von Beckers.

In the court martial that followed, the general was convicted despite the adverse circumstances. The Commission called the surrender "not fully justified, but in some respects excusable". The general was not re-employed and his pension was canceled.
