Johann Benedikt von Groeling

Johann Benedikt Jacob von Groeling (born November 23, 1726 in Aschersleben , † August 25, 1791 in Pniow) was a Prussian lieutenant general , chief of the hussar regiment No. 6 and owner of the rulership of Rudzinitz with Kurzina and Piela.

His father was a rider in the Cuirassier Regiment No. 6 , his mother was a citizen's daughter from Halberstadt .

Military career

Groeling went to Silesia in 1746 and joined the "Natzmer" hussar regiment as a simple hussar . When in 1755 the regimental commander, later Lieutenant General Seydlitz , was transferred to the cuirassier regiment "Rochow" , he took Groeling with him and made him a sergeant . In 1760 he became a cornet in the "Zieten" hussar regiment and in the same year he was second lieutenant . On the recommendation of Seydlitz, on March 20, 1762, when the Hussar Regiment No. 9 (Bosniak Corps ) was expanded, he was transferred to the same, promoted to major and given a squadron . At the end of the Seven Years' War the corps was downsized again. Groeling initially came back to the "Zieten" hussar regiment but in 1764 to the "Werner" hussar regiment .

In 1768 the king and his descendants raised him to the nobility and gave him the Silesian Inkolat . In 1772 he became lieutenant colonel and in 1778 commander of the regiment. In the War of the Bavarian Succession he was able to distinguish himself on May 22nd, 1778 near Glanitz in an attack on Major General Knebel near Mladecka. He became a colonel for this and received the order Pour le Mérite . During the attack, the "Württemberg" and "Young Modena" dragoon regiments were dispersed, their camps were captured and 400 prisoners were taken. In 1785 Groeling became chief of Hussar Regiment No. 6 and on June 29, 1786 he was promoted to major general. In 1791 he received his resignation with the character of lieutenant general. But he died a short time later.

During the Seven Years' War he fought in the battles near Lobositz , Roßbach , Leuthen , Hochkirch , Kolin , Zorndorf and Reichenbach . He was slightly wounded in the last three.

family

In 1749 he married Johanna Juliana Habel, a bourgeois daughter from Festenberg (Silesia) . The couple had nine children. Two sons and two daughters survived. One of the sons became a Prussian major. His son Karl became the owner of a blast furnace and heir in Rudzinitz.
