Johann Christian Ludwig von Schmidt (born June 19, 1769 in Warnstedt ; † August 25, 1833 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian major general and most recently the commander of the 6th Uhlan Regiment .

Life

His parents were the commissioner and owner of Warnstedt Johann Jakob Schmidt and his wife Juliane Luise Albertine, née Kirchhof.

Career

On May 1, 1788, Schmidt became a Junker in the “von Usedom” hussar regiment of the Prussian Army . There he was promoted to cornet on May 28, 1790 and second lieutenant on March 7, 1793 . During the campaign in Poland , Schmidt was wounded in a battle near Inowladz. He also fought at Blonie, Wola, Kutno and the siege of Warsaw. For Inowladz, King Friedrich Wilhelm II awarded him the order Pour le Mérite on April 10, 1794 . On October 29, 1799 he became a prime lieutenant . As such, Schmidt took part in the Fourth Coalition War.

After the war he was promoted to staff assistant master on April 23, 1807 and aggregated into the 1st Silesian Hussar Regiment on June 23, 1809 . There he was promoted to Rittmeister and appointed squadron chief on November 23, 1811 . On August 2, 1812, however, he was transferred to the gendarmerie . On June 1, 1813, he joined the 7th Silesian Cavalry Regiment as commander. During the Wars of Liberation , Schmidt fought in the battles near Dresden , Kulm , Leipzig , Laon , Montmirail , Chateau-Thierry , Paris as well as the siege of Erfurt and the battle near Jeanvilliers. In Leipzig he acquired the Iron Cross 2nd class. In addition, Schmidt became major on December 23, 1813 with a patent from August 21, 1813 and on October 3, 1815, Lieutenant Colonel .

On June 8, 1816 he was then aggregated into the 6th Uhlan Regiment ; In addition, on October 23, 1816, he received the Iron Cross 1st Class. On March 30, 1817 Schmidt was transferred to the 6th Uhlan Regiment and appointed commander on March 30, 1818. On March 30, 1823 he became a colonel and on June 13, 1825 he received his departure as major general with a pension of 1500 thalers. On July 15, 1825, he was also given 300 thalers as a gift, and on December 20, 1825, the service cross and authorization to wear the general uniform without an official badge. He died on August 25, 1833 in Potsdam and was buried there on August 28, 1833.
