life and work

Johann Ehrlich, a member of the extensive family of organ builders Ehrlich, was born as the son of Georg Adam Ehrlich the Elder. Ä. (* December 30, 1777 in Lauingen ; † December 30, 1848 in Passau ). His older brother was Anton Ehrlich . When his father's company moved to Passau, he learned the trade of organ building from his father. In 1843 he took over the company of the childless organ builder Joseph Schweinacher in Landshut. There he married the pharmacist's daughter Walburga Hofbauer (born 1824) on April 22, 1845 in St. Martin's Church . The couple lived at 374 Herrengasse. His wife died early. Although Johann Ehrlich also died at the age of 40, he was able to build numerous organs with mechanical action in Lower Bavaria , Upper Bavaria and in the southern Upper Palatinate , of which a relatively large number of instruments are still preserved. He usually built the prospectuses with three-part flat fields, with the middle one being elevated. In addition to some neo-Gothic structures, the post-classical variants are more typical of Ehrlich's style. The sound of the instruments is brilliantly contemporary, the registers are characterized by distinctive characteristics. Martin Hechenberger also influenced his work . After his death, Franz Strauss and his relative Johann Rödl Ehrlich applied for his company. Franz Strauss took over the workshop, but Johann Rödl Ehrlich also received a license in Landshut as an organ builder in Landshut.
