Johann Friedrich Gronovius (the Latinized form of Gronow ) (born September 8, 1611 in Hamburg , † December 28, 1671 in Leiden ) was a German classical philologist and text critic .

Life

After studying at the universities of Jena , Leipzig , Altdorf , Leiden and Groningen , he traveled to England , France and Italy . 1643 he was appointed professor of rhetoric in history and at the Gymnasium Illustre Deventer appointed in 1658 to the Greek of -Lehrstuhl Leiden University appointed, where he served as 1661/62 and 1670/71 rector and librarian of Leiden University Library worked. Here he stayed until his death.

Gronovius edited and commented on Statius , Plautus , Livius , Tacitus , Cicero , Aulus Gellius and Seneca's tragedies. In addition, he was - among many other works - author of the Commentarius de sestertiis (1643) and editor of Hugo Grotius ' De jure belli et pacis (1660). His observations contain a great number of brilliant emendations . He was the father of Jakob Gronovius and the grandfather of the botanist Jan Frederik Gronovius .
