Johann Friedrich von Merkatz (Colonel)

Johann Friedrich von Merkatz (* 1698 in Berlin ; † March 29, 1763 in Neisse ) was a Prussian colonel and chief of the Silesian Artillery Corps.

Life

His father was the Prussian lieutenant colonel in the artillery Friedrich Meerkatz († 1719 in Wesel ).

Military career

Merkatz joined the artillery corps in 1713 and became second lieutenant on April 6, 1717, and advanced to staff captain until 1729 . In 1734 he took part in the Rhine campaign as commander of the artillery. In 1736 he became a captain . For his services Merkatz was raised to the nobility on September 28, 1737 by King Friedrich Wilhelm I ; he also received the Order De la Générosité . In the same year he was transferred to the fortress of Pillau as a major . In the First Silesian War he marched with the army to Silesia in December 1740 and fought near Mollwitz and Chotusitz . He was also promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1741.

During the Second Silesian War , Merkatz was able to distinguish himself near Kesselsdorf , where he acted as commander of the center's batteries . After the war he was promoted to colonel in 1747. In 1756 he took over the Silesian Artillery Corps. He also oversaw all armories in the province of Silesia . He died in this position at the end of the Seven Years' War in March 1763 in Neisse.

family

Merkatz was married to Amalie Keller (* 1706 - 23 December 1791). The later Prussian Major General Johann Friedrich von Merkatz (1729-1815) emerged from the marriage.
