Johann Friedrich Ludolf von Merkatz (born January 14, 1729 in Brandenburg an der Havel , † August 27, 1815 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and inspector general of the artillery .

Life

Johann Friedrich Ludolf was the son of Johann Friedrich von Merkatz (1698–1763) and his wife Amalie, née Kellner (* 1706; † December 23, 1791). His father was a Prussian artillery colonel and chief of the garrison artillery company in Neisse, as well as the governor of Rosenberg.

Military career

Merkatz was hired on December 6, 1746 in the field artillery corps of the Prussian Army and on May 13, 1752 as a second lieutenant in the 1st battalion. During the Seven Years' War he took part in the battles near Prague , Breslau and Leuthen and in the meantime became captain and company commander on December 27, 1761 .

For his services rendered during the war, King Friedrich II elevated him to hereditary nobility on November 7, 1770.

Merkatz came to the 2nd Artillery Regiment as a major on December 3, 1773, with whom he participated in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On December 13, 1785, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and as such he became commander of the 4th artillery regiment. After Merkatz had become a colonel on August 2, 1787 , King Friedrich Wilhelm II appointed him chief of the 1st artillery regiment on February 2, 1792, as well as a deputy inspector general of the artillery. He then took part in the 1792/94 campaign in the cannonade near Valmy and the siege of Mainz . On January 5, 1793, he was promoted to major general . Two years later, on September 22, 1795, he was finally appointed inspector general of the entire artillery. The following year Merkatz celebrated his 50th anniversary in service and the king had a commemorative coin minted on the occasion. On May 28, 1798 he was promoted to lieutenant general and on May 20, 1799 he was knighted for his long service to the Order of the Red Eagle .

At his request, Merkatz was discharged from military service on December 24, 1806 for reasons of age.

family

Merkatz married on February 13, 1765 in the Berlin garrison church Susanne Katharine Finger, widowed Pfendner (* August 1736 in Berlin; † December 30, 1804 there). He had the following children with her:

  • Henriette Wilhelmine (born August 24, 1776 in Berlin; † June 13, 1782 there)
  • Amalie Friederike Charlotte ∞ NN von Steinwehr , Prussian captain

The later Prussian Major General Karl Pfendner von Merkatz (1759-1823) was his stepson .

After the death of his first wife, Merkatz married Johanna Wilhelmine Koepke on January 5, 1808 in Berlin (born September 19, 1743, † December 7, 1809 in Berlin).
