Johann Baptist Michael Albaneder , from around 1794 also Albani (born September 30, 1762 in Schwaz , Tyrol , † April 1824 ) was an Austrian sculptor , embosser and ceramist . From around 1810 he also devoted himself to wax painting .

Life

He was the eldest son of the master potter Johann Albaneder , whose family had been practicing this craft for several generations. Albaneder learned his father's trade and worked in Innsbruck , where he also practiced drawing . In 1781, at the age of 19, he traveled to Trento and Florence , where he learned modeling in clay , porcelain and wax . Since, however, he did not like the pottery, he tried in 1783 as a clerk at the customs . But after only 18 months he gave up this post again.

In the following years Albaneder devoted himself exclusively to art and created his portrait medallions in the English Wedgwood technique in the style of classic portrait fashion . He worked as a court boss for the most important courts and became known throughout Europe. He was Thurn und Taxisscher Hofbossier and was registered in Salzburg on April 20, 1791 as a princely Kemptischer . At that time he also worked for a certain time in the Marienberg Abbey .

Emperor Leopold II appointed him as a teacher at the Vienna Model Academy . From around 1794 Albaneder gave himself the stage name Albani .

In the years 1794 to 1797 he manufactured a. a. the porcelain portraits of the Eichstätter cathedral chapter , today in the Eichstätter cathedral treasury and diocesan museum.

After great success, he returned to his homeland due to the first Napoleonic wars . In 1802 he founded a majolica and earthenware factory in Schwaz with five workers , using the clay store above Maurach, a current district of Buch in Tyrol , discovered in 1801 by an English technician , as a raw material for his production, since their clay is used as a had proven particularly suitable. But four years later (1805) he had to sell his factory to Marin Rosa Countess von Wolkenstein-Rodenegg (1744–1808) due to lack of money .

From around 1810 Albaneder lived in Munich and also worked here in wax painting. In 1813 he also made a wax portrait of the Würzburg merchant Peter Bolzano .
