Johann Michael Mappes

Johann Michael Mappes (born October 10, 1796 in Frankfurt am Main ; † April 28, 1863 there ) was a German physician and politician . Among other things, he was a member of the Pre-Parliament (1848) and the Fifties Committee .

biography

Mappes was born the son of a cloth maker and attended the municipal high school and the Lyceum Carolinum in Frankfurt am Main. After graduating from high school, he studied medicine in Tübingen . There he was one of the founders of the old Tübingen fraternity Arminia in 1816 , having previously been a member of the Corps Teutonia Tübingen . In Tübingen he made friends with Ludwig Uhland and Friedrich von Römer . In 1817 he became Dr. med. and settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1818 as a doctor and obstetrician. In this role he was present at the birth of Georg Speyer . In Frankfurt, with short interruptions, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Free City of Frankfurt from 1827 to 1862 , belonged to the Constituent Assembly from 1848 to 1849 and was a member of the Pre-Parliament and the Fifties Committee in 1848 .

From 1819 he belonged to the Senckenberg Society for Natural Research , was secretary there from 1821 to 1840, teacher of anatomy from 1828 to 1845 and director of the anatomical collections at the Senckenberg Medical Institute in Frankfurt from 1849 to 1850. From 1852 until his death he was chairman of the Dr. Senckenberg Foundation , where he particularly took care of the library. In Frankfurt, he was in 1845 Stadtaccoucheur and 1851 Physicus violinist . In 1824 he was one of the founders of the Physikalischer Verein in Frankfurt. In 1847 he was its chairman.

He was the author of numerous writings. In 1852 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
