Philipp Ganz studied at the Art Academy in Vienna and was apparently on a study visit to Leipzig in the early 1770s. He was court engraver of the Electorate of Hanover in Göttingen and Hanover and since 1784 a member of the Academy of Mahlerey and Sculpture in Kassel .

Philipp Ganz mainly created small-format engravings with portraits , landscapes and depictions of ancient statues from the Wallmoden Collection . Characteristic for his work are a very fine line and graphics in crayon style. His works are often with “Ph. Entirely ”signed, sometimes with“ GZ ”or“ G. del. et. sculp. ”.

Ganz created portraits of personalities in Hanover, of Prince Friedrich of York , of General Superintendent Johann Friedrich Jacobi zu Celle, of doctor and writer Johann Georg Zimmermann , of court doctor Johann Adam Kersting , of court pharmacist Andreae , of Freiherr von Knigge and of Dorothea Schlözer .

The ex-libris of the Royal Public Library in Hanover, in use since 1776, really stood out . He was also responsible for the typographic equipment of the fifth volume of the great Guelf source history ("Origines guelficae") edited by Johann Heinrich Jung .

In 1792 the budget for the copper engraver of the Royal Library of Hanover was increased from 192 to 250 Reichstaler and Johann Gerhard Huck was employed as court copper engraver. However, Philipp Ganz was still an employee of the library until 1800.

Ganz designed and drew the tomb for the court advisor and royal personal physician Paul Gottlieb Werlhof , which was executed in 1783 by Johann Friedrich Ziesenis for the St. Nikolai cemetery in Hanover.

Ganz was a member of the Masonic Lodge Zum Schwarzen Bär and in 1777 a founding member of the Lodge Zur Ceder in Hanover.
