Johannes Dickert comes from a Christian family. At the age of eight he received his first piano lessons from his great uncle, a private music educator, cantor and organist. When he was 15, Dickert received organ lessons at the Chemnitz Castle Church . His career aspiration at the time was organ builder, after graduating from school he learned the trade of cabinet maker . He then studied church music in Dresden and completed additional pedagogical training in catechetics , religious studies and Christian teaching in Potsdam . At the end of 2013, the then 60-year-old resigned from his position as church music director in the Leipzig region (he was also the longest-serving church music director in Saxony) on the grounds that he wanted to “concentrate more on community work”.
