Johannes Werlin (Benedictine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Werlin OSB ( baptized December 25, 1588 in Landsberg am Lech ; † May 29, 1666 in Seeon-Seebruck ) was a Bavarian Benedictine priest , composer and song collector.

Life

Werlin was the son of the tailor Gaspar Werlin and received lessons at the monastery schools in Dießen and Andechs . He entered the Seeon monastery as a novice in 1609 and was ordained priest in Salzburg in 1614 . In 1625 he became prior in Seeon, in 1634 also choir director. 1637–39 Werlin worked as a subprior of Attel Abbey . In 1640 he was a priest at the pilgrimage church Maria Eck . In 1659 he resigned his priory due to health problems and, partially paralyzed, he was wasting away in his last years.

Werlin was musically gifted and educated in many ways and wrote several church music works. His main work, however, is his large-scale handwritten collection of songs from the 16th and 17th centuries, created between 1646 and 1648, which he systematized and arranged according to the stanza schemes. This six-volume collection, which contains folk songs as well as works by other composers and Werlin's own songs, is considered one of the most important sources for the German song of the early baroque and is the only surviving source for many of the songs it contains.
